Position Description

Are you a passionate Environmental Chemist with a keen eye for quality and data integrity Serco has an opportunity supporting EPA where you could make an impact every day as an Environmental Laboratory Lead Chemist.

This is an exciting opportunity leading an environmental laboratory testing and support team. The Lead Chemist will assist with the performance of established chemical analyses instrument calibrations and maintenance and data interpretation and validation in Fort Meade MD.

Serco supports the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) where every day is Earth Day. Our skilled scientists collaborate with EPA staff at their state-of-the-art Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division (LSASD). Here youll be part of the Environmental Service Assistance Team helping the EPA achieve their mission to protect human health and the environment.

In this role you will:

  • Lead analytical chemists using EPA methods
  • Conduct organic sample analysesand calibrate instruments using TO-14A and TO-15 Air Methods
  • Interpret validate and upload data to LIMS
  • Maintain lab operations inventory and quality standards
  • Monitor workflow and performance metrics
  • Perform peer reviews SOP audits and corrective actions

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • BS/BA in Chemistry or related field from an accredited university
  • 8 years in an environmental laboratory and/or using EPA methods. (6 years with an MS 4 years with a Ph.D)

  • 5 years managing analytical chemists
  • Expertise in AIR TO-14A and TO-15 Methods including calibrations and instrument maintenance.
  • Expertise in air canister cleaning and certification; Preparation/packaging/Shipping air canisters
  • Expertise in Organic and Inorganic prep analyses and data review
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365
  • Strong analytical communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to obtain EPA Public Trust
  • Must have experience working in a lab
  • Must have experience working in an environmental lab.
  • Upon customer approval aHybrid work schedule may be offered.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends if required
  • Must be able to work standing for long periods
  • Must be able to work inside a chemical laboratory and handle chemicals
  • Must be able to wear all PPE (personal protective equipment)

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40-Hour certification
  • 2 years as an organic and/or inorganic chemist or lab technician
  • Expertise working in a lab with Organic Analysesor Inorganic analysesor Air Toxics analysesor Water Toxics analyses.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification

In compliance with state and local laws regarding pay transparency the salary range for this role is $75000 to $125000 however Serco considers several factors when extending an offer including but not limited to the role and associated responsibilities a candidates work experience education/training and key skills.
