TheMilwaukee Public Library is seeking a dedicated and motivated professional toserve as a Library Services Supervisor. From coaching and mentoring staff toassisting patrons with everything from book checkouts to technology this roleblends leadership with hands-on service. Purpose

The Library Services Supervisor oversees circulationactivities at Milwaukee Public Library branches including schedulingsupervising and assisting circulation staff.

The Milwaukee Public Library currently has one vacancy basedat the Atkinson Branch Library. This eligible list may be used to fill futurevacancies at other locations.

Essential Functions

Supervision

  • Provide daily supervision for a team of circulation staff members
  • Schedule staff for hours of work daily desk schedules vacation allowances schedule changes and assignments of emergency help to other agencies. Review and approve requests for time off and ensure entries are entered timely and accurately.
  • Assist with the hiring process including participating in interviews and onboarding new employees.
  • Provide coaching mentoring guidance and evaluation of staff to ensure quality service and safe practices.
  • Instruct staff on circulation procedural changes and additions e-mail and use of office equipment.
  • Assign circulation staff work requested by librarians to support library activities.
  • Assist the Library Circulation Manager in developing training procedures and materials for circulation staff.
  • Interpret the impact of system circulation and rules upon branch services and make suggestions to the Library Services Manager and the Library Circulation Manager.
  • Serve as needed as the staff person in charge of opening and closing the library. May function on an intermittent fill-in basis as Person-in-Charge of the agency.
  • Assist in maintaining and improving the physical layout and environment and providing an adequate and orderly work area for staff.
  • Serve as a contact person between the MPL and other agencies in matters relating to circulation activities reporting and clarifying computer problems and training staff in additional computer uses.

Public Service

  • Support staff in proactive customer service strategies when serving the public.
  • Address patron problems relating to circulation or registration.
  • Assist with circulation duties and shelving.
  • Assist the public in general computer use and with all self-service resources.
  • Provide reference and readers advisory assistance to patrons.
  • Inform staff and patrons of circulation procedures enforce regulations and grant exceptions when warranted.

Administration

  • Determine discrepancies found in the library catalog and refer to Technical Services for correction.
  • Monitor special collections.
  • Ensure accurate preparation of daily cash sheets and cash register currency.
  • Handle damaged materials and bill patrons for damaged items.
  • Assist in updating and entering bib and item records.
  • Assume responsibility for outstanding orders of library material and supplies inventories online catalog maintenance financial reports circulation statistics and other neighborhood library statistics records circulation or agency reports etc.
  • Enter and update security incident reports.
  • Serve on system-wide committees as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

The Library Services Supervisor must be willing and able todo the following:

  • Perform physical activities in the work environment that require agility including walking and standing crouching stooping kneeling reaching balancing pushing and pulling.
  • Lift and move items weighing up to 20 pounds frequently and/ora negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to provide emergency help as assigned to all 13 locations throughout the Milwaukee Public Library system.
  • The schedule is Mondays & Tuesdays 11:30 am 8 pm Wednesdays Fridays 9:30am 6pm and rotating Saturdays & Sundays from 8:30 am 5pm.

The pre-employment medical requirements for this positioninclude:

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelors degree in business administration computer science human resources or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. Two years of Library Circulation experience.
  3. Continued employment is contingent upon completion of a three-credit reference course from an accredited school within one year of the date of appointment

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may alsobe considered.

Technical

  • Knowledge of modern library organization procedures policies mission goals services and trends particularly as they relate to public library systems.
  • Knowledge of library circulation procedures; knowledge of library rules and regulations with the ability to read and interpret them.
  • Knowledge of technical reference procedures and interlibrary cooperation.
  • Ability to learn the workings of the MPL system including its policies functions relationships and resources.
  • Ability to read and interpret a wide variety of job-related documents; broad knowledge of subject disciplines and wide-ranging reading interests.
  • Knowledge of computers online catalogs databases networks and their applications for library use; proficiency in using word processing spreadsheet and database software.
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures and accident prevention practices.

  • Written communication skills to create clear and concise business communications such as policies reports procedures and plans using correct English grammar and punctuation conventions.
  • Ability to work effectively with City managers and staff elected officials community groups and residents from all socioeconomic educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to solve problems.
  • Verbal communication skills to ensure the accuracy of information conveyed and to explain complex concepts to individuals with varying degrees of understanding.
  • Ability to work effectively with City managers and staff elected officials community groups and residents from all socioeconomic educational and cultural backgrounds.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 2GN) is$66992 - $76474annuallyand the resident incentive salary rangefor City of Milwaukee residents is$69002-$78768annually.Appointmentwill be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance. Appointmentto the Library Services Supervisor title is normally at the beginning of thepay range.
