Main Purpose of Job

An Activity Therapy Manager is the managerial level of work at Maryland Department of Health (MDH) designated Court Involved (CI) Facilities overseeing the facility-wide activity therapy program for the treatment of mentally ill aged physically ill or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients who are residents of State treatment facilities. Employees in this classification will supervise Therapeutic Recreator Supervisors Art Therapist Supervisors Dance Therapist Supervisors and Music Therapist Supervisors assigned to the facilitys activity therapy in this classification receive managerial supervision from a program administrator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelors or Masters degree in art dance music therapeutic recreation orrecreation with a major in therapeutic recreation from an accredited college oruniversity.

Experience: Three years of experienceperforming art therapy music therapy dance therapy or therapeutic recreationtherapy work in the treatment of mentally ill aged physically ill orphysically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients. One year ofthe experience must have been at the supervisory level.

Notes:

1. Current certification as an ArtTherapist from the American Art Therapy Association; as a Music Therapist fromthe National Association for Music Therapy Inc. or the American Associationfor Music Therapy Inc.; as a Therapeutic Recreator from the National Councilfor Therapeutic Recreation Certification; or as a Dance Therapist from theAmerican Dance Therapy Association may be substituted for the requirededucation.

2. Four years of experience as aprofessional Therapeutic Recreator music art or dance therapist under thesupervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist licensed Physical Therapistor certified Activity Therapist which included the responsibility for clientsassessments and the planning implementation and evaluation of clientsrecreation music art or dance therapy treatments in a mental health ordevelopmental disability setting may be substituted for the educationrequirement. Experience assisting in these responsibilities will not beaccepted as qualifying experience.

3. Candidates may substitute Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer orhigher as a commissioned officer in Therapy classifications or Therapyspecialty codes in the Therapeutic Recreation field of work on a year-for-yearbasis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:
  • Experience working with both adolescents and adults who have mental health illness diagnoses.
  • Experience in TJC and CMS documentation standards for Therapeutic Recreation Services.
  • Experience supervising other therapeutic recreators in psychiatric facilities.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classificationmay be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employeesassigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operatorslicense valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Employees in some positions in thisclassification may be required to operate vehicles which require a ClassC motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.

3. Employees in this classificationmay be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation trainingand maintain current certification.4. Employees in thisclassificationat facilities with a swimming pool may be required toobtain Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safetyprior toappointment.
