THIS POSTING IS ONLY OPEN TO RESIDENTS OF THE STATE OF COLORADO AT THE TIME OF SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION.

This recruitment will be used to fill current and anticipated Special Agent vacancies statewide in various investigative assignments based in Regional offices located in Golden/Lakewood Pueblo and Grand Junction. This recruitment will also fill vacancies in Satellite offices located in Alamosa Durango Eagle and Montrose within the Colorado Department of Public Safety in the next 12 months.

DURANGO VACANCY ONLY: Residents and non-residents of Colorado may apply and be hired into this position as the work will be performed primarily at a location that is within 30 miles of the state border.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS) consists of five Divisions: Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Colorado State Patrol (CSP) Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM). The Executive Directors Office (EDO) provides administrative and management services to the operating divisions of the department.

The primary mission of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is to meet the statutory responsibility and obligation to respond to requests from Sheriffs Police Chiefs District Attorneys other state agencies and the Governor on a 24-hour 7 day-per-week basis to assist in the detection investigation and enforcement of Colorado criminal laws.

The CBI is charged with the responsibility to investigate organized crime which cuts across jurisdictional boundaries of local law enforcement agencies and to locate and apprehend persons who are fugitives from the law.

The CBI also provides law enforcement services including managing statewide criminal justice information conducting criminal and civil background checks and operating an internationally-accredited forensic laboratory system. The units described below perform these functions:

About the Work Unit
The Investigations Section supports local law enforcement in operations involving Major Crime Investigations Cold Cases Fugitives Sex Offenders Crime Scene Firearms and Narcotics Offenses Cyber Crime and Identify Theft as well as other specialized cases. Appointed CBI Special Agents may be assigned to any of the units within CBI Investigations including the following:


Regional Major Crimes Cold CaseCrime SceneEconomic Crimes Digital Forensics FugitiveSpecial Investigations Organized Crime and Firearms andSpecial Investigations Illicit Marijuana.

About the Job
This position is a POST Certified Peace Officer in Colorado and exists to collect preserve analyze and interpret physical evidence collected in criminal cases for federal state and local law enforcement agencies; and to conduct investigation of major crimes including document review interview and interrogation surveillance informant handling undercover activities search and seizure arrest and prosecution of criminal offenders.

The Special Agent II will perform duties with guidance from senior or lead agents. Seeks opportunities to further professional development by attending training and specializations to advance career.

Work Environment
  • Typical work hours: Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
  • Primary work will be out of an office in Alamosa Golden/Lakewood Durango Eagle Grand Junction Montrose or Pueblo

Key Responsibilities

Special Agent II
Investigative Participation
Conducts primarily lengthy complex criminal investigations i.e. homicide officer involved shootings serious assaults and other felonies for local law enforcement agencies state agencies or as directed by the Office of the Governor. Investigations include: interviews of suspects witnesses and victims. Searches for evidence of criminal acts. Writes comprehensive specific reports of findings and actions. Effects physical arrests and attends required training when necessary. Seeks opportunity to further professional development by attending training and specializations to advance career. Attends all assigned training and maintains all required certifications prescribed by agency written directives and Colorado Peace Officer. Completes required training or development plans in order to become more proficient. Learns technical aspects and career-specific knowledge to become effective in a variety of areas related to investigations. Consults their Field Training Agent a Special Agent III or their Supervisor.

Legal Procedures
Writes affidavits warrants case filing for presentation to district attorneys grand juries and trial courts. Gives testimony in court makes recommendations regarding prosecution to district attorneys and the Attorney Generals office relating to complex criminal investigations.

Criminal Intelligence Analysis
Collects analyzes and disseminates criminal intelligence pertaining to known and suspected offenders by recruiting and supervising informants and gathering information from various sources.
Provide specific examples of regular ongoing decisions made by this position related to this duty.
This position will meet with members of the public confidential sources and law enforcement members to obtain raw intelligence material.
The position will have to determine the proper options to analyze and utilize the information provided.
The position will cultivate recruit and meet with confidential informants and citizen informants and will need to determine the veracity and value of the information provided.

Investigative Analysis
Learns and practices to analyze and corroborate legal and Agency documents and records in support of criminal investigations pertaining to complex and organized crime activities.

OR

A combination of related education and/or professional investigative or detective experience with a law enforcement agency equal to five (5) years. If education is substituted for work experience an unofficial transcript of the relevant education must be provided with your application.
Current Colorado POST certification in good standing.

II. Special Agent III Minimum Qualifications:
Six (6) years of professional investigative or detective experience with a law enforcement agency.
Current Colorado POST certification in good standing.

OR

Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in any field and two (2) years of professional investigative or detective experience with a law enforcement agency.
Current Colorado POST certification in good standing.

OR

A combination of related education and/or professional investigative or detective experience with a law enforcement agency equal to six (6) years. If education is substituted for work experience an unofficial transcript of the relevant education must be provided with your application.
Current Colorado POST certification in good standing.

REQUIRED CORE SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and experience with preliminary and follow-up investigation of felony crimes as defined by Colorado Revised Statutes.
  • Experience in the methods and techniques of investigating organized and narcotics crime.
  • Experience in writing search and arrest warrants along with court orders for production of records for felony crimes.
  • Experience in creating planning andmanaging complex investigations.
  • Being formally designated or assigned as a Detective or Investigator in a Colorado law enforcement agency.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must be a Colorado resident at the time of application.
  • This position requires unusual shift and travel demands for investigations training and court testimony. Requires 24/7 availability to assist with investigations including weekends and holidays. Work may be conducted anywhere in the State of Colorado.

  • Position must be productive IMMEDIATELY and may be the only person available with investigative expertise. Position handles extremely sensitive intelligence material. Position exercises use-of-force/lethal force decision making. Position must possess knowledge skills and abilities to elicit information from suspects witnesses and victims.
  • Applicant must be willing to be fingerprinted successfully pass a polygraph drug screen psychological exam medical physical and an extensive background investigation to include criminal financial employment and driving history. If you have used any illegal drugs in the past three years or have been convicted of a felony or domestic violence you will be disqualified and will not be hired for this position.
  • Requires a valid Colorado drivers license with no active position requires response to criminal investigations and crime scenes anywhere within the state of Colorado and may operate a fleet vehicle.
  • Special physical requirements: vision hearing minimum upper body strength satisfied through POST skills certification.
  • Primarily assigned to specialized unit position must be willing be support any of the CBI Investigations Unit that include but not limited to Major Crime Investigation Cold Cases Fugitives Drug and Firearm Offenses Cyber Crime Digital Forensics and Identify Theft.
