Summary of Position



Conducts the apprehension rescue and control of sick injured at-large or abandoned animals both wild and/or domestic as found within the jurisdiction of Madison County; conducts investigations into ordinance or statutory violations animal cruelty and neglect cases and issues violation warnings and court tickets as appropriate. Interacts with the public other outside agencies and organizations representing the Madison County government perform related work as required.



Examples of Duties and Responsibilities



  1. Liaisons with the public regarding county animal issues. Informs the public about the laws regarding animals rabies bites and strays. Advises the public on the proper safety precautions relating to animal health and welfare the importance of spaying and neutering household animals TNR and other information as directed.
  2. Patrols area of responsibility; assists Madison County Sheriff Illinois State Police and Township Officials when needed.
  3. Will take directions and perform day to day duties as instructed by the Lead Officer.
  4. Receives and investigates complaints involving possible violations follows up on correction of ordinance and state violations offers advice on solutions and makes follow-up inspections.
  5. Issues violation warnings and tickets as required.
  6. Will help in the office with answering phones taking complaints handling bite cases sent to the department working with community service officers on impoundment of animals and bite cases and the return of animals to owners.
  7. Conducts emergency on-call after hours this includes weekends and holidays in rotation set by the Lead Officer and Manager.
  8. Maintain open availability during hours when office is closed including holidays when required for response to call outs or emergency disaster response.
  9. Utilizes animal control tools equipment and vehicles in the proper manner and maintaining same in proper working order.
  10. Prepares activity reports and records of inspections investigations transactions and correspondence according to established policies and procedures.
  11. Assists in the facilitation of transfer of impounded animals to various humane societies and animal welfare groups in accessing available animals for potential adoption.
  12. Adheres to timeliness/deadlines and balances their workload when involved in multiple projects.
  13. Provides ratio dispatch capabilities.
  14. Set live traps for animals when appropriate.
  15. Cleans and disinfects kennels in the prescribed manner according to current practices.
  16. After licensing and training will perform humane euthanasia when needed on both domestic and wild animals.
  17. Prepare rabies specimens for lab.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned by manager or Lead Officer.

Minimum Qualifications


A high school diploma and a valid drivers license with a satisfactory driving record. Must have the ability to obtain a Certified Euthanasia Technician license issued by the State of Illinois. No animal control or animal experience is required but is preferred.



Physical Requirements


While performing the duties of this job the employee will be exposed to wet or humid conditions extreme heat extreme clutter and unsanitary conditions. This includes both animals and humans. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. An employee will also work around many animals and because of that the employee will be exposed to dander and other allergens found on the animals and in the environment. Employees are frequently required to walk run and sit. Must have full use of both hands and legs. The employee is required to stand reach with hands and arms climb or balance stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and move up to 75 pounds.
