Job Description

The Department of English at the University of Nevada Reno invites applications for an Assistant Professor of U.S. literature from the period 1865-1930 with a desired secondary area in Queer Theory to begin on July 1 2026. We welcome applications from candidates specializing in any literary genre but the candidate should be comfortable teaching and advising students on texts from both the nineteenth century and the twentieth century. The candidate should have a robust research agenda and substantial teaching experience in U.S. literature of the period as well as demonstrated teaching experience with queer theory.

Candidates possessing or expecting PhDs in English Literature or related fields no later than July 1 2026 are invited to apply. The faculty member who joins the department can expect to contribute to the departments undergraduate and graduate programs and will have opportunities to participate in the universitys Core Humanities Program and interdisciplinary race and ethnic gender and sexuality Indigenous and global studies programs as appropriate.


The teaching load will include both undergraduate and graduate courses. Faculty who teach and mentor graduate students and engage in scholarly research typically have a 2/2 load.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in English or a closely related field or demonstrate clear progress toward completion by July 1 2026. In addition they should present an active and promising research agenda and show both experience and potential as an excellent teacher.

Successful candidates must be able to teach relevant courses possess an established research agenda in U.S. literature () and demonstrate expertise in Queer Theory.

Preferred Qualifications

A track record of campus programming or community engagement is preferred including experience developing curriculum.

Department Information

The Department of English housed in the College of Liberal Arts offers a diverse range of fields of study including literature language and linguistics professional and public writing and creative writing. We also offer a minor in cinema and media studies. Our graduate programs include PhD concentrations in literature and Rhetoric & Writing Studies an MFA in creative writing and MA degrees in literature RWS and Public Engagement.
