Job Description

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS - TE TARI HŪ-O-TE-KŌHAO
DIVISION OF SCIENCES

About our team/Mō te tīma

The Physics Department at the University of Otago was the first Physics Department established in New Zealand and a foundation discipline when the University opened in 1871.

Today the Department embraces innovative teaching methods promotes a vigorous research ethos and is committed both to Physics as a discipline and to its applications. Our key objectives are to provide students with the highest quality education and to produce research of international excellence.

The role/Te mahi

As a Teaching Fellow within our Department your focus will be to provide 100-level laboratory support.

Key tasks of the role will include:
Demonstrating 100-level labs and providing exam support.
Coordinating assessment marking and ensuring the provision of constructive and timely feedback to students.
Supporting other undergraduate teaching in physics as required.

Ideally candidates will have:
Undergraduate physics laboratory experience.
An ability to relate to a wide variety of people within a teaching environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills including written and verbal communication.
Commitment to working in a culturally safe and respectful manner and demonstrated understanding and appreciation of Te Ao Māori Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and Pasifika values.
An ability to work collegially and independently.

This is a full time (1FTE) fixed term position for six months (January to July 2026) located in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

The successful candidate will be appointed to an appropriate step on the Teaching and Professional Practice Fellow salary scale ($75727 to $87849) based on skills qualifications and experience.

You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for this role.
