Position Summary
The Youth & Family Support Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the growth and well-being of youth (aged 16-24) who may face barriers such as poverty family instability limited access to education involvement in the justice system or challenges related to mental health and substance use. Rooted in culturally sensitive trauma-informed and strengths-based practices the Coordinator provides direct counselling family support and youth programming that nurture resilience belonging and healthy development. Working with both The Green Room and KULAN the Coordinator helps create welcoming environments and workshop opportunities where young immigrant newcomer and BIPOC youth can explore their strengths build meaningful connections and grow into confident leaders who contribute to a more compassionate and just society. Your Impact

- Strengthen families through facilitated dialogue and conflict mediation building healthier relationships and long-term stability.
- Prevent harmful pathways (e.g. gang involvement cycles of violence) by offering positive alternatives such as mentorship father-son programs and skill-building opportunities.
- Amplify immigrant newcomer and BIPOC youth voices helping them grow as leaders who contribute to a more compassionate and just society.
- Contribute to systemic change by supporting outreach advocacy and partnerships that make schools mosques and community organizations more inclusive and responsive.
Key Responsibilities
1. Direct Support & Case Management- Facilitate supportive conversations conflict mediation and dialogues between youth family members and institutions to address trauma conflict and isolation.
- Support clients with personal goal setting advocacy and navigation of schools workplaces and public systems.
- Facilitate father-son programs to promote healthy masculinity and prevent gang involvement.
- Manage referrals maintain records and monitor risks to ensure long-term stability.
2. Program Facilitation & Development- Design and deliver workshops (or coordinate external facilitators) on mental health financial literacy career readiness and healthy relationships.
- Lead support groups mentorship and recreational activities that foster belonging and resilience.
- Incorporate restorative justice principles in program design and facilitation.
- Assess community needs expand programming and recommend improvements based on outcomes.
3. Collaborative Community Engagement & Partnerships- Contribute to community events campaigns and awareness initiatives in partnership with other staff and organizations
- Build and maintain partnerships with schools city services law enforcement and local organizations.
- Support culturally relevant outreach strategies and multilingual resources for schools mosques and hubs.
4. Monitoring Reporting & Storytelling- Track client progress outreach outcomes and program impact using Transform.
- Gather and integrate feedback to refine services and strategies.
- Contribute to reports media and storytelling that highlight program successes and community impact.

About The Green Room
As a youth initiative of IslamicFamily The Green Room provides safe welcoming and culturally and spiritually supportive spaces where young people can explore their strengths build meaningful connections and develop confidence and skills to flourish. Launched initially on an Edmonton public school campus in 2014 The Green Room has expanded to support youth and young adults across the city. Programs are offered at Edmonton public school campuses the University of Alberta and the IslamicFamily Community Hüb with mentorship opportunities for youth interested in community work and civic engagement. Through its activities and initiatives The Green Room is working towards a thriving community where every young person is socially connected psychologically resilient spiritually grounded and actively shaping a more compassionate and just society.
About KULAN
Horn Youth Services Foundation (KULAN) was established to support and empower African-descendant communities in Edmonton Alberta. Since 2017 KULAN has provided culturally sensitive programs and services addressing the unique needs of African-descendant youth and families. Its mission is to foster social and economic opportunities support integration into the broader community and build vibrant healthy communities through strategic partnerships collaborative initiatives and inclusive programming. KULAN also organizes community activities and events that celebrate members experiences and talents while promoting knowledge-sharing and cultural learning.
Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Social Work Psychology Counseling or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- 2 years of experience in counseling youth work family support or community engagement.
- Ability to speak in Somali and Arabic would be an asset.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed culturally responsive and restorative justice practices.
- Strong facilitation skills for workshops groups and community events.
- Experience with case management referrals and partnership development.
- Lived experience and/or strong understanding of Muslim immigrant and refugee communities is a significant asset.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for community programs.
