With a primary hub in Wellington and a presence throughout the country NZ Police ICT delivers new and enhanced solutions directly and through specialist vendor partnerships. We provide expert advice on how technology can be leveraged to support Polices strategies and turn concepts into reality through collaborative development.

We are currently seeking a Lead Developer to drive the design development delivery and maintenance integral policing software.

Our Lead Developers work closely with product owners and solution architects to ensure our applications meet NZ Police standards. This includes the delivery of appropriate design documentation and the consideration of industry best practices.

The Lead Developers support the progress and improvement of the development practice at NZ Police. They provide mentorship and guidance to other members of the team and wider ICT community. This will include directing work and providing support and feedback for developers in your product team. They will promote learning and continuous improvement practices by sharing their knowledge of delivery in the Police SDLC.


Key Accountabilities:

Takes technical responsibility for the delivery of software in products or projects.
Provides advice to the relevant Product Managers and Technical Product Owners on the ongoing strategic direction to improve the platforms and the team capabilities and capacity.
Leads system design activities for strategic large and complex delivery work.
Works with internal business customers to understand problems and design solutions.
Works with other leads and management to build a strong development team understanding future work and required capability for successful delivery.
Contributes to organisational standards and processes for software development.
Stays up to date with new and upcoming technology with the intent of improving development practices at NZ Police.

To be successful in this role you will require the following:

Extensive experience with programming languages like Java or JavaScript.
Ability to mentor and coach other members of the practice.
Solid understanding and experience with design patterns and software architecture.
Ability to work collaboratively across the organisation and adapt to changing requirements.
Experience leading software development teams.
Proficiency in Agile methodologies and product development.
Ability to think strategically planning for the long term as well as today.
Excellent customer and stakeholder engagement skills able to break technical concepts down into simple terms for a range of non-technical audiences.
Be an effective communicator and technical leader.

This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will be dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
