THE POSITION:
Clerk II is the journey levelgeneral clerical classification. Incumbents in this class perform functionswhich require the exercise of initiative and judgment. Incumbents perform awide variety of moderately difficult clerical work requiring the ability tochoose among a limited number of alternatives in solving routine are assigned duties involving work with a variety of documentsformats or persons frequently involving arithmetic calculations typingspecific information from a group of standardized source documents for entryinto a data processing system or performing a search and retrieval of computerfile information by way of computer terminal (CRT) or personal at this level require that incumbents have the ability to identifyerrors in basic English spelling and grammar or arithmetic in documents whichgenerally are not reviewed for technical detail or accuracy.

The equivalent of six months ofexperience in the class of Clerk I in the Alameda County classified service.(Non-classified includes District Attorneys Office Hospital Authority andthe Consolidated Courts.)

Completion of a post high school clerical training program from a businessschool vocational training center or a clerical internship program whichwould enable the applicant to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed below.
License: Possession of a valid Drivers license may be required for certainpositions.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualificationsin the announcement of an examination.
The most suitably qualified candidates will possess thefollowing competencies:
Knowledge of:
Basic elements of correct English usage grammar spelling punctuation andarithmetic.
General office practices equipment business correspondence.
Multi-line telephone system.
Ability to:
Perform general clerical work (typing filing reception) and learn thespecific operations procedures and equipment of the office.
Perform arithmetical computations.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Establish and maintain cooperative relations with the public and otheremployees.
Identify and correct errors in basic spelling English grammar and math.
Learn specific operations and procedures of job.
Plan and organize ones own workload and files.
Screen telephone calls and take complete and accurate messages.
Selective Certification Criteria:
A. For positions requiring the ability to type at a speed of not less than 40net words per minute from clear copy. Typing occupies more than 10 percent ofworking time.
B. For positions required to type at a speed of not less than 40 net words perminute from clear copy and to transcribe dictation from dictating occupies more than 10 percent of working time. (Candidatesindicating a willingness to use dictating equipment will be certified to thosepositions where using the equipment is required without having to take aperformance test).
Alternate Range Criteria:
1. For positions required to transcribe dictation from dictating machinerecording these duties occupying more than 10 percent of working time.
THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
1) A review of applicants applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidateswho possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the nextstep in the examination process.
2) A virtual multiple-choice written component that will be weighted as qualifyingonly (pass/fail).
3) A virtual computer skills assessment with the followingcomponents (pass/fail):
A. Typing Test
B. Microsoft Word
C. Microsoft Excel
Only candidates who pass the written examination andcomputer skills assessment will be invited to the oral interview process.
4) A virtual oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of thecandidates final examination score. The oral interview may contain situationalexercises.
CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACHPORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
