Pacific Environment campaigns to eliminate fossil fuel use from the shipping industry within their climate division by building strong regulatory frameworks to achieve zero-emission shipping on a timeline commensurate with the climate emergency; pressuring corporate customers to demand zero-emission ships; and influencing ports on the Pacific West Coast and beyond to end fossil fuel build-out and ready themselves for zero-emission shipping instead. We focus on environmental justice labor equity and science-based timelines for climate action.
Position
Pacific Environment is seeking a full-time Arctic Advocacy Manager to join our Arctic team to expand PEs range of activities in focal areas such as pollution prevention biodiversity protection and minimizing the effects of climate change.
To be successful in this role the candidate should have experience in or familiarity with:
*Collaboration with Alaska (and other Arctic) Indigenous Peoples
*Marine Policy at Domestic and International Levels
*Coordination and Leadership of Strong Coalitions
*Understand of Arctic Climate and Energy Issues
*Mobilizing public support to stop the climate crisis and protect vulnerable communities impacted by worsening climate
*Campaigning and/or organizing experience is a plus.
This position will report to the Arctic Program Senior Director
Responsibilities
- Support the management of Pacific Environments Arctic Program including developing and implementing various campaign and advocacy tactics to achieve our objectives.
- Support Pacific Environments engagement at the International Maritime Organization and Arctic Council and other international fora
- Tracking and summarizing Arctic related submittals to the International Maritime Organization
- Tracking materials submitted to the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) working group of the Arctic Council
- Preparing submittals to the IMO PAME and other international Arctic fora
- Lead policy strategy development and implementation in Alaska and track U.S. and Alaska legislation related to Arctic issues
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with decision-makers and other key partners including but not limited to community and environmental justice groups tribal nations regulatory agencies labor organizations and more
- Attend Arctic Coalition Meetings and assist in maintaining ongoing notes for those meetings
- Attend and document Alaska community and Indigenous Organization meetings
- Represent Pacific Environment with the press in coalitions with key allies and in key policy forums and assist the PE Communications Team in preparing and posting Arctic materials for media dissemination
- Conduct research and analysis to support policy development
- Maintain a calendar of International Arctic Events including a specialized calendar of events and meetings taking place in Alaska
- Other tasks as determined by the Arctic Program Senior Director
Key Qualifications
- Minimum 5-6 years of relevant work experience particularly in Arctic policy advocacy or environmental and social change organizations
- Experience in advocacy policy and campaign work
- Experience in program development and implementation
- Strong interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written
- Effectiveness operating as part of a team
- The ability to develop strong constructive relationships with other NGOs policymakers scientists and community/indigenous leaders
- Experience and success in fundraising are a plus
- Proficiency working with Microsoft Office Asana Slack and online research tools

$80000 - $90000 a year
Pacific Environment provides compensation commensurate with experience and equitable with others on our team plus a full benefits package for staff positions. The salary range for this position is $80000 - $90000 per annum which is carefully considered to account for equity and the final offer will be based on a candidates qualifications. Physical Requirements
The Program Officers work involves remaining in a stationary position and looking at a computer for long stretches of time communicating with co-workers electronically and occasional travel (including overnight travel) in-person meetings or events. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all the physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Location and Travel
Pacific Environment staff currently work from home. Alaska area local applicants and U.S. West Coast residents are preferred. However we will consider highly qualified candidates residing elsewhere in the U.S. This position requires working West Coast Time Zone hours and potentially an occasional evening or weekend. Some travel within Alaska the broader U.S. and the IMO in London or other international meetings will likely be required.
