Job Description

JOB TITLE:Next Step Housing (NSH) Case Worker

Tentative hours:Sunday to Thursday OR Tuesday to Saturday. The shift will be between 8:00 am and 9:00 pm. Shift to be determined (TBD).

Job Type: Full-time Permanent Position with a Benefit Package after Probation

Salary: $44646 per year

Next Steps Housing is a supportive housing building for youth (16-25) run by oneROOF Youth Services. This youth-specific living and learning environment pairs independence with a mix of helpful in-house and community resources. Continuous on-site staffing enables quick and supportive action if necessary which fosters a sense of security for residents.

Job Skills Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Case Management for 6 to 10 tenants.
  • Safely resolve crises and respond non-judgmentally to problematic behaviour
  • Assess the needs of tenants and help and/or make referrals to various community resources when appropriate
  • Crisis management and de-escalation of situations among tenants
  • Supervision of the tenants and their guests while on the property
  • Awareness & support of a harm reduction approach
  • Build self-esteem and self-efficacy in tenants
  • Increase life skills development
  • Maintain tenant files and statistics
  • Supportive listening and assist tenants with problem-solving as requested
  • Demonstrate understanding of oppression and marginalization
  • Make positive contributions to the team support and back up your co-workers always
  • Support community integration and the self-efficacy of tenants
  • Create and run weekly programming with the tenants
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Maintain the health and safety of tenants and staff
  • Participate in training and staff meetings as directed by management
  • Clean common areas as required
  • Basic understanding of individual systemic and structural facets of homelessness
  • Effective verbal and written skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Other duties as required

Educational and Employment assets/requirements

  • A diploma in Community Social Services or education in mental health addictions concurrent disorders and social work
  • One year of recent related work experience with an emphasis on mental health addictions homelessness and/or social services
  • Or an equivalent combination of education training and experience. We look at the whole person
  • UMAB certification would be an asset
  • Must have a valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Must produce a recent Vulnerable Sector and Criminal Record Check
