Job Summary

The Department of Computer Science at Boise State University is accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position seeking applicants in software engineering particularly those with research that complements current areas of strength in the department such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses developing a strong research program funded by external sources supporting and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and providing service to the University and the profession along with other activities typical for a tenure-track faculty. Candidates will start in the fall of 2026.

Department overview:

Over the last ten years Boise State University has made a significant investment in the growth of the Department of Computer Science with nineteen new faculty lines a building in downtown Boise and several new undergraduate and graduate programs. This investment has enabled the department to more than triple in size over the last ten years to twenty seven faculty (19 tenure-track) and now awards 100 undergraduate degrees and 20-30 MS/PhD degrees each year.

The undergraduate degree in Computer Science offers emphasis areas in Cybersecurity Machine Learning Entrepreneurship and Secondary Education with enrollment averaging around 700 students. A new undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence Science was started in Fall 2025. An interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Computing program was started in 2016 with emphasis areas in Artificial Intelligence Computer Science Cybersecurity Data Science Computer Science and Computational Math Science & Engineering. The PhD program has quickly grown to be the largest PhD program at Boise State with 80 students and faculty participation from a multitude of departments across campus. Forty six PhD students have graduated and accepted positions in industry universities or national labs.

TheCollege of Engineeringand Department of Computer Science have a strong record of providing support and mentoring for early and mid-career the last several years new faculty have been very successful in obtaining external funding with six Computer Science faculty members receiving NSF CAREER awards and several other faculty receiving large grants from various funding agencies.

The department is a critical part of the vibrant software and high-tech industry in the Boise metropolitan area with close relationships with tech companies and a strong and active industry advisory 2016 the department moved to a new building located in the heart of downtown Boise within walking distance to dozens of software companies but still close to the main campus. The departments location in the heart of downtown allows faculty and students to interact more frequently with the ever-growing number of local software companies. Furthermore the department has close relationships with Idahos K-12 school system and has been instrumental in developing and establishing K-12 computer science curricula and standards as well as establishing and supporting K-12 teacher training programs.

Minimum qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in computer science or a closely related field is required by the date of hire.

  • Applicants should demonstrate potential for establishing a record of excellence in teaching significant contributions in research and experience in collaborating with faculty or industry to develop and sustain funded research programs.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Research focus on software engineering particularly with research that complements current areas of strength in the department such as cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary ranges from $105000 to $110000.

Our standard faculty contract is a 9-month contract with pay and benefits spread over 12 months. This is a yearly renewable contract. More information about faculty contract and work days is available here.
