About ERA

Equal Rights Advocates (ERA) is a 501(c)3 national nonprofit organization that fights for gender justice. For 50 years ERA has led the country in protecting and expanding economic and educational access and opportunities for women girls and gender-expansive people. Through litigation policy advocacy and public education our work advances gender racial and economic equity.



Overview:

ERAs Communications Internship program is designed to help social-justice minded creative and social media-savvy undergraduate students gain knowledge and experience in pursuit of a career in nonprofit communications digital marketing social media and content creation. We are seeking to host two Communications Interns in the Spring 2026 semester (January-May).


What You Will Do:

You will learn from shadow and collaborate on projects with ERAs Strategic Communications Team. Taking into account your strengths and areas of interestas well as our teams needslearning opportunities and project focus may include: social media content creation video creation and editing graphic design digital marketing trends monitoring digital communications data collection and analysis communications campaign strategy development event planning/support drafting copy for digital and marketing platforms and/or narrative shifting through community storytelling.


Who Should Apply:



  • Preference will be given to undergraduate students planning to pursue a career in nonprofit work public policy or public service and who are studying any of the following: communications marketing multimedia public relations digital media/graphic design nonprofit management political science or another area of study supporting the students plan to enter the social justice field.
  • We are happy to consider candidates who are not pursuing an undergraduate degree as long as they are at least 18 years old and have a strong interest in pursuing a career in nonprofit communications.


What ERA Is Looking For:

A successful intern will offer a blend of creativity project management skills and practical experience with a variety of social media platforms. Wed love to host someone with:


  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to civil rights gender equity and social justice

  • Strong written communication skills are required

  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Experience with Canva preferred

  • Experience with video creation or editing preferred

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and work well collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

What Is Your Takeaway:

An enriching experience at a nonprofit organization working toward gender racial and economic justice; exposure to and experience with a variety of professional Communications functions skills and tools; content you create that can be added to your professional portfolio including examples of your written work graphic design and/or video production; experience working independently on projects as well in collaboration with others; professional connections; social media / digital marketing data analysis; and other skills you can add to your résumé/CV.

Hours Location and Compensation:

The internship will run for approximately 15 weeks from mid-January through late April. Interns must be willing to work 15 to 20 hours per week. The internship may be fully remote anywhere within the United States but preference will be given to those who can work a hybrid work schedule in San Francisco.

This is an unpaid internship. You will be eligible to receive monthly reimbursement for cell phone expenses for the duration of the internship.
