The mission of George Washingtons Mount Vernon is to preserve restore and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington so that his example of character and leadership will continue to inform and inspire future generations.
The Executive Director of Gardens and Landscapes is a new position at Mount Vernon designed to integrate key teams to develop a unified vision and strategy for continued growth and development.
This leader will have the opportunity to design this new department establishing the structure culture collaboration and vision to achieve the ambitious work underway at Mount Vernon. This will include working closely with the CEO Senior Leadership team and Board on key strategies and activities to support the work of this department.
In addition the new executive will play a leading role in an exciting major site planning process at Mount collaboration with a renowned international landscape architectural firm Mount Vernons leadership is launching an ambitious Comprehensive Landscape Master Plan to shape the future of the 450-acre estate harmonizing historical preservation landscape restoration conservation modern sustainability and enriched visitor experiences.
In partnership with the President and CEO and the Board the ED provides strategic vision planning and management for the long-term health sustainability and interpretation of Mount Vernons gardens and landscapes. These include acres of various landscapes including the historic core of George Washingtons iconic estate an eighteenth-century demonstration farm orchard forests ornamental and historic gardens greenhouses and support areas as well as representative heritage livestock and archaeological resources.
This role is critical to fulfilling the mission to preserve restore and manage George Washingtons estate at the highest level while educating audiences worldwide about his legacy including his work as an innovative experimental farmer and an early proponent of agricultural sustainability.
The organization seeks an accomplished professional who demonstrates proven expertise in organizational leadership in horticulture landscape history or landscape architecture as well as cross-team collaboration with a strong interest in historic preservation.
Successful candidates will have experience aligning departmental goals with broader organizational strategies and capable of integrating horticultural archaeological and sustainability initiatives into cohesive master plans. The ideal candidate will have advanced skills in translating the goals of the President and CEO the Board and the community into prioritized projects and activities that will fulfill the long-term vision of Mount Vernon.
