Job Description

Introduction

The Management Trainee Program offers recent collegegraduates an opportunity to pursue a career in public service through aone-year appointment performing analytical and communications functions.

Purpose

The Management Trainee assigned to the Mayors Office willserve as Communications Coordinator and will assist in planning and executingcommunications and media efforts on behalf of the Office of the Mayor and theCity of Milwaukee.

Appointment to this Management Trainee position is exemptfrom Civil Service; accordingly the incumbent will not be eligible fortransfer or promotion into a Civil Service position.

Essential Functions

  • Research plan and execute events and media opportunities that showcase the Administration and departmental initiatives priorities and programs.
  • Manage the Mayors Office social media efforts and website providing content continuous evaluation and opportunities for improvement.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to generate attention to the Administrations efforts.
  • Produce news releases and advisories.
  • Maintain media directory and other records of communications activity.
  • Staff Mayor at various events by coordinating involvement and managing follow-up.
  • Conduct research to advance communications and media efforts.
  • Assist in the coordination and creation of background materials and key messages.
  • Provide input and participate in major office efforts including State of the City budget address and other special events and programs.

Minimum Requirements

1. Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree from anaccredited college or university within the past two years (at time ofapplication).

NOTE:Students in their final year of college (at timeof application) may participate in the selection process but would not beeligible for appointment until degree completion.

2. One year of experience planning and coordinatingcommunications and media efforts (including developing and maintaining awebsite for an organization) in a public private or a non-profit setting.

3. Valid drivers license at time of appointment andthroughout employment.

Knowledge Skills Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Skill in the maintenance and development and of social media and web content.
  • Skill in scheduling planning and organizing communications plans.
  • Knowledge of customer service practices and maintaining customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software applications to facilitate work processes (e.g. work processing spreadsheet and presentation software).
  • Skill in reading and interpreting a variety of technical written materials.
  • Ability to review and analyze data and apply the results to reach accurate conclusions.

Time Management/ Judgement

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and solve problems as they occur.
  • Ability to plan establish priorities and complete multiple projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with individuals at all levels of the organization and within the community.
  • Written communication skills to produce clear and concise reports correspondence and public documents including press releases.
  • Skill in the practice of active listening.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of people including coworkers City officials representatives of other agencies and the public.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity; ability to work cooperatively effectively and fairly with co-workers and residents whose backgrounds may differ from ones own.
  • Professionalism honesty integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Current Salary

The current salary range (PG 2EX) is$60022annuallyand the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$61823.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESSwill be job-related and willconsist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of educationexperience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written orperformance test a structured interview or other assessment methods. TheDepartment of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the mostqualified candidates to structured interviews and performance interviews may include written exercises. Selection processcomponent weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

INITIAL FILING DATE:The selection process will beconducted as soon as practical after the deadline listed above. Receipt ofapplication materials may be discontinued at any time after this date withoutprior notice. However recruitment may continue until the Citys needs havebeen met. The applicant is responsible for attending all phases of the selectionprocess at the time and place designated by the City of Milwaukee.
