POSITION FUNCTION
Perform carpentry tasks in the construction and maintenance of City buildings structures equipment and accessories.
KEY DUTIES
Construct forms install reinforcing steel and place concrete for structures such as footings walls slabs columns seismic collectors access ports and vaults; lay out fabricate install and repair stud walls stairs joists rafters fences floats docks bleachers walkways roofing system greenhouses bus shelters doors windows and related material finishes and hardware; construct install and repair flooring drywall cabinets countertops handrails shoring scaffolds steel studs and suspended ceiling systems.
Secure and make temporary repairs to damaged structures; produce wedges stakes braces and spreaders for city crews.
Design customize and fabricate varied structures and accessories; quantify time material and equipment based on blueprints plans and prepared estimates; make trade calculation for layout work; use surveyors level for elevations in site layout and installation of batter boards and offset pins; produce templates for shop products or to guide machinery in cutting and sharpening.
Operate various equipment and hand tools such as shop and portable power carpentry equipment pneumatic and hydraulic carpentry and construction equipment; operate a vehicle to transport equipment and materials; use truck-mounted crane and/or forklift to load and unload vehicle.
Liaise with consultants contractors subtrades engineers and suppliers regarding clarification or changes to design or materials used.
Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is assigned and reviewed by supervisor.
Issues involving deviations from standard trade procedures or design changes are referred to supervisor.

Lift and move heavy materials and equipment. (frequent)

Short periods of intense concentration while feeding materials and operating power cutting equipment. (often)

Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to equipment noise sawdust debris and fumes. (frequent)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Understand and apply the principles of the carpentry trade.
Use hand and power tools.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Current and valid B.C. Certificate of Trade Qualification in carpentry. (4 years)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Drivers Licence.
Experience:
3 years of related experience.
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
