As a Carbon Disclosure Project global A List city and the largest local authority in Europe serving a population of over 1 million people 1000s of businesses and around 450000 households Birmingham has a key role to play in supporting the UK Governments Climate Change Act commitments and regional energy strategy priorities.

The Councils Route to Net Zero team provides a range of essential functions including devising policy building delivery partnerships and providing expertise on an exciting portfolio of economic growth social benefit and environmental initiatives. It oversees the Councils corporate and city net zero activity and champions environmental sustainability across all directorates and sectors.

About the Role

Birmingham City Council has set ambitious carbon reduction commitments and our Route to Net Zero (R20) team is at the heart of driving this change. As an Assistant Portfolio Officer youll play a key role in supporting the development delivery and monitoring of projects that will help the city transition to a more sustainable future.

This is a varied role where youll combine strong organisational and communication skills with a genuine data and risk registers to co-ordinating meetings and supporting communications youll be central to ensuring our projects run smoothly and align with governance and quality standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain the R20 project monitoring database and risk register providing accurate information to support performance reviews.
  • Assist project leads in meeting governance and quality management requirements.
  • Produce reports and dashboards to track progress and compliance with funding and procurement requirements.
  • Organise and support internal and external meetings including agendas papers minutes and follow-up actions.
  • Co-ordinate and support engagement activity including the R20 Community Assembly and Advisory Committee.
  • Research emerging issues and best practice in climate change and carbon reduction preparing briefing notes where required.
  • Contribute to communications and reporting activity including preparation of materials for stakeholders.
  • Support wider Council climate change activity ensuring alignment with the Route to Net Zero Action Plan.
