As a Communications Specialist you will play a key role in sharing this story with staff residents media and community partners.
Position Summary
The Communications Specialist will plan implement and evaluate communication strategies that connect our mission with the people we serve. This role manages internal and external communications media relations digital content and community outreach. The position also serves as a departmental Public Information Officer as needed.
Essential Duties
- Coordinate media relations: write releases pitch stories manage media inquiries and prepare leaders for interviews.
- Lead internal communications: e-newsletters intranet updates and leadership messaging.
- Plan and support community engagement: outreach events public meetings and special initiatives.
- Develop content and editorial calendars for print digital and social media platforms.
- Ensure accuracy and readability in all materials following AP and Johnson County style.
- Serve as Public Information Officer providing timely and accurate communication during public inquiries or emergencies.

Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelors degree in Journalism Communications Public Relations Marketing or related field (experience may substitute).
- Experience: Two (2) years of professional communications journalism or PR experience including social media and graphic/video content.
- Skills: Strong writing editing and public speaking skills; ability to manage multiple priorities; proficiency with Microsoft Office SharePoint Drupal and related platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of experience in public sector or nonprofit communications.
- Knowledge of the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA).
- Experience with event planning outreach or communications in human services environments.
Additional Requirements
- Must pass post-offer screenings including background check and drug/alcohol test.
- May require work outside of regular office hours.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and travel locally as needed.
