CBC Kids News is real kids real news. We are committed to creating the best content with the goal of providing Canadian kids with trusted credible news that helps them better understand the conversations that are happening around them. At the heart of that is a dedicated team of adults who keep the engine running on a daily basis while our team of kid contributors are in school.
Your Role:
You are the cornerstone of all of the content that gets produced out of the KN team. You are extremely organized detail-oriented efficient with your time have a strong sense of story selection proven leadership and mentorship to less-experienced members of a team. You are a champion of CBCs journalistic standards and practices and believe that quality is paramount especially when it comes to creating content with and for kids. You have a natural desire and ability to seek out story ideas that appeal to kids (hint: you spend a healthy amount of your free time on YouTube and other socials.)
Key Tasks:
Review team pitches for merit and fit based on KNs mandate and litmus test as outlined and directed by the senior producer.
Assign stories to adult staff and kid contributors while considering which team member is best suited based on story topic format and capacity to meet daily output goals.
Manage workflows between team members and for projects; from research to copy editing to video production.
Help team members manage their workload by prioritizing tasks based on content needs and each persons workload.
Maintain a content calendar and think strategically about future story options by managing content plans 1-3 months in advance.
Run daily morning KN pitch meeting.
Communicate with other teams across CBC to inform our content plans feed into the networks content goals share resources and ensure we arent duplicating efforts.
Communicate with our team of kid contributors and our list of KN Insiders to gather their ideas and feedback on our editorial planning.
Scan internal and external media sources for stories that are trending or of clear value to our audience.
Work with senior producer to find efficiencies and improvements in processes and production.
Participate in the preparation of program objectives.
Find ways to stay current with what topics kids are interested in.
Stay current on digital production best practices and trends.
Act as a sounding board for the team in collaboration with the senior producer around issues related to legal and ethical matters in order to maintain journalistic standards.
As required perform the following tasks:
Pitch story ideas.
Produce content for text and video-based assignments.
Do story outlines with writers and help them troubleshoot daily assignments.
Copy edit the work of others.
Work with a unit or business manager to hire contributors and/or manage production/resource requirements.
Collaborate with team members on special projects.
Review published content to check that it meets KNs standards style and format outlines.
Share published content with CBC and external platforms to help increase brand awareness.
Upload digital content to Expression Engine YouTube and other digital publishing platforms as required.
Identify develop and maintain contacts appropriate to the area of assignment.
Experience Required:
You have at least 7-10 solid years of experience in news or producing complex and accurate current affairs content for kids.
Experience producing visual elements using Canva Adobe Photoshop and Premiere is an asset.
This position is a 5-month contract with the opportunity to extend for an additional year.
