As part of its research activities The Florey is committed to ensuring the ethical humane and responsible care and use of animals for scientific purposes and insists upon the highest standards for animal care and use.

About the Role

The primary responsibility of the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) is to ensure on behalf of the institution that all activities involving animals for scientific purposes are conducted in compliance with the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes (the Code) and relevant government legislation.

As such all members of the AEC play a critical role in ensuring the ethical humane and responsible care and use of animals at the Florey.

The Florey is seeking expressions of interest for dedicated volunteers to join our AECs as Category C (animal welfare) members as stipulated in the Australian Code:

• A person with demonstrable commitment to and established experience in furthering the welfare of animals who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution and who is not currently involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. Veterinarians with specific animal welfare interest and experience may meet the requirements of this category. While not representing an animal welfare organisation the person should where possible be an active member of and endorsed by such an organisation.

Duties will include:

• Attending AEC meetings (4 hours per meeting 6-11 meetings per year) at our Parkville campus.
• Reading and commenting on meeting materials.
• Some out-of-session reviews.
• Participation in annual facility inspections.

The role is voluntary but an honorarium sitting fee will be provided
