Job Summary

The UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Genetic Counselor to provide genetic counseling to patients and families in the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics Division of Medical Genetics & Genomics. This position will also work with the Iowa Newborn Screening program housed in this division. This position will be advertised as a dual position of Associate Genetic Counselor and a Genetic Counselor depending on the candidates background and qualifications.

Duties to Include:

  • Provides genetic counseling to patients and families.

  • Performs educational administration and research activities as required.

  • Obtains reviews and organizes relevant medical educational and other records and reviews with geneticist prior to seeing patients in clinic.

  • Prepares patient educational materials prior to clinic.

  • Explains tests reviews potential results and discusses implications with the patients/ families.

  • Documents a clear concise summary of counseling and care coordination provided in the newborn screening program database and/or EPIC as appropriate

  • Provides follow-up counseling for patients/families e.g. by telephone letter or return visit.

  • Acts as a liaison and advocate for patients/families with 3rd party payors billing office and others.

  • Develops and presents education on newborn screening genetic testing as well as disorder specific education to newborn screening stakeholders as needed. The stakeholders include but are not limited to: parent(s)/guardian(s) health care professionals in hospitals and clinics throughout the state the general public legislators students in health care and public health programs throughout the state the media and health care learners who rotate in the Division of Medical Genetics & Genomics.

  • Develops and implements genetic counseling protocols for new disorders added to the newborn screening panel; assists with reviews and revisions of existing newborn screening follow up protocols.

  • Participates in the design and implementation of research projects and assists with analysis and summarization of results as needed.

  • Maintains communication and working relationships with other health care providers educational systems.

  • Responds to requests for information on newborn screening and genetic topics.

  • Participates in newborn screening programmatic meetings and/or committees as requested.

  • Participates in presentations and preparation of manuscripts/posters.

  • Participates in new and on-going projects of the Iowa Newborn Screening Program and the Division of Medical Genetics & Genomics.

  • Represents and promotes the Iowa Newborn Screening Program and the Division of Medical Genetics & Genomics.

  • Attends educational meetings in-services seminars and workshops to maintain and advance personal knowledge base.

  • Attends patient care genetic conferences and journal club.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge base regarding newborn screening genetics and genomics.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge base and compliance with genetic counseling practices and standards as set by the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).

  • Maintains Iowa genetic counseling licensure and ABGC board certification.

Education Requirements:

Masters degree in Human Genetics or Genetic Counseling.

Required Qualifications for Associate Genetic Counselor:

Genetic Counseling clinical rotations or internship experience; or 6 months to 1 year of experience in the field of genetic counseling is required.
Board certification or eligibility in genetic counseling from the American Board of Genetic Counseling is required.
Current licensure or eligible to be licensed as a Genetic Counselor in state of Iowa is required.
Proficient in computer software applications (Office Suite)
Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Valid Drivers License and the ability to meet and maintain The University of Iowa Fleet
Safety Program driving standard.

  • Ability to travel; some overnight stays required

Desired Qualifications for Associate Genetic Counselor:

Demonstrated experience with developing educational materials
Demonstrated experience with teaching health related topics to the general public and to health care professionals
Demonstrated experience participating in quality improvement activities
Demonstrated time management skills and ability to prioritize projects/tasks

Required Qualifications for Genetic Counselor:

  • Board certified/board eligibility as a genetic counselor
    Proficient in computer software applications (Word Excel and web searches)
    Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid Drivers License and the ability to meet and maintain The University of Iowa Fleet
    Safety Program driving standard.
  • Ability to travel; some overnight stays required

Desired Qualifications for Genetic Counselor:

Demonstrated proficiency in Spanish
Demonstrates time management and ability to prioritize projects/tasks
Some (6 months to 1 year) experience in genetics research and/or patient recruitment
Some (6 months to 1 year) experience with grant writing and submissions.
Knowledge of University and UIHC practices rules and regulations.

Pediatrics will be filling this position at one of two levels. The Associate Genetic Counselor salary range is $46450 -$78000 and the Genetic Counselor salary range is $55613 -$98000 indicate in your cover letter the level of classification you wish to be considered for or indicate both.
