Senior Producer Original Video The National

The National is looking for an innovative journalist to lead our team of award-winning journalists so we can continue to own the biggest news stories in the world making sense of them for audiences everywhere they want to watch them.

Reporting to the Executive Producer of The National this Senior Producer will lead our current affairs and original video team. You will assign develop and vet content from the worlds top journalists and field producers. You are known for both your creative storytelling skills your journalistic rigour and your ability to keep calm under tight deadlines.

You will help our team turn around contextual pieces in a breaking news environment under tight deadlines and plan ahead so the team can also tackle in-depth stories that make news. You will play a key role in our leadership team to ensure The Nationals content is available to audiences when and where they want it - and work with leaders across CBC News to achieve our shared goals.

You are an experienced current affairs producer and a proven newsroom leader. You know what it takes to deploy reporters and producers around the country or the world keep them on budget and keep them inspired. You can review a paper edit screen a rough cut and understand how to work with the story team to make it better with speed and confidence.

People love working with you youre calm under intense pressure and you can make quick decisions in a daily news environment. You have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor motivate inspire and support a programming team to make great content. You have an open mind a great work ethic and a sense of humour. You also live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

You love to innovate and evolve video storytelling to reach audiences who may not consume news in traditional ways. You are passionate about finding original or underreported stories about the biggest issues facing Canadians and the world. And you are committed to ensuring these stories reach and resonate with as many people as possible on on-demand live social and streaming platforms.

Strong video field producing skills are a prerequisite. So is an understanding of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and how it applies to this work.

You possess the following:

  • Seven (7) years of experience in news video storytelling including long-form current affairs

  • Five (5) years of leadership experience in a newsroom

  • An ability to choose relevant audience focused stories which reflect issues being discussed by the general public

  • Experience conceiving planning shaping and vetting news content and current affairs under tight deadlines

  • Proven ability to lead through change

  • Excellent editorial judgement

  • Excellent understanding of social media and on-demand platforms

  • Track record of creativity and experimenting with different formats and treatments

  • Track record of promoting an inclusive and respectful work culture

  • Track record of elevating diverse perspectives ideas and differing points of view.

  • Demonstrated ability to coach inspire and bring out the best in a team

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high pressure environment under tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to pivot when breaking news happens.

  • Solid understanding of CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods.

This is a full-time permanent position based in the Toronto Broadcast Centre.
