Job Duties

This position is responsible for surveying oyster grounds within an assigned geographic region. Duties may include acting as a contact point for marine survey party in the daily surveying of oyster leases public ground locations aquaculture permit requests and other survey projects as assigned. The role involves producing individual platts and composite maps that delineate leased and public oyster grounds in relation to the shoreline using the Virginia State Plane Coordinate System. The incumbent will maintain and update digital maps within the VMRCs jurisdiction and provide support to Shellfish Management Division programs as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Process new oyster planting ground applications and Joint Permit Applications for aquaculture activities.
Establish and maintain the necessary control network to ensure that oyster planting ground corners can be relocated using both conventional and/or GPS equipment methods and computations as situations require.
Prepare and update base maps of assigned area to ensure that they contain all relevant and accurate VMRC information (e.g. oyster ground leases public ground lines survey control stations shell plant locations fixed fishing device locations and Virginia/Maryland line).
Assist Habitat Management Law Enforcement and Fisheries Management in determining lease lines shellfish condemnation areas location of violations mapping locations of artificial reefs brood-stock sanctuaries and shell/seed transplant areas and fixed fishing device locations and prepares plats for record.
Performs cleaning and maintenance minor repairs to boats motors and survey equipment.
Confer with constituents with leases State and other public officials as required to advise and guide them on location of existing leases public ground lines property lines the application/transfer process and relevant sections of the Code of Virginia pertaining to marine surveying and the leasing process
Research records at the Court House for titles and deeds of present and previous highland property owners and oyster ground leaseholders.
Compile and prepare monthly administrative reports of surveys time sheets expense accounts gasoline and mileage reports for boat and car.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Thorough knowledge of both conventional and GPS surveying principles processing mapping and applicable mathematics.
Ability to work outside in the marine environment.
Must be able to interact with a wide variety of personalities and social statuses.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Professional certification in surveying.

This position requires physical ability to lift up to 20 lbs.; pushing and pulling; standing sitting reaching walking bending stooping and climbing
