Job Description

General Summary:

The Mobile Health Program Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a 40-ft mobile health unit (MHU) transporting it between the designated garage and scheduled community locations across Chicago and surrounding areas. This individual plays a vital role in supporting the success of mobile health operations and the Lurie Childrens Mobile Health Program by ensuring the vehicle is maintained in excellent condition for clinical care facilitating safe transport of staff supplies and equipment and serving as a professional representative of Lurie Childrens in diverse community settings. The driver is expected to conduct routine vehicle inspections before and after each trip assist with basic equipment set-up and vehicle maintenance and upkeep maintain a clean safe and welcoming environment for patients and staff and help troubleshoot issues as they arise. A strong commitment to safety reliability professionalism and service excellence is essential.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operates the 40-ft mobile health unit (MHU) safely and professionally in urban and neighborhood settings ensuring timely arrival and departure from designated locations in collaboration with Mobile Health Program staff and clinical personnel while adhering to all applicable local state and federal traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Perform thorough pre- and post-trip safety and mechanical inspections including tire pressure fluid levels brakes and lights and document inspection results and report maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly.
  • Clean mobile unit (interior and exterior) fuel and stock with essential supplies before each deployment coordinate with leadership or appropriate facilities for routine maintenance service and repairs and maintain accurate logs of fuel usage mileage and vehicle maintenance and service history.
  • Provide basic technical or mechanical troubleshooting escalating complex issues or concerns to leadership or the appropriate facilities.
  • Log data essential to the upkeep of the mobile unit mileage generator hours routine maintenance etc.
  • Assist Mobile Health Program team with onsite mobile unit set-up and breakdown including positioning and leveling the vehicle setting up access ramps or stairs and connecting to power sources or utilities when applicable sanitizing exam spaces between patients escorting patients to and from mobile unit and obtaining basic assessments
  • Collaborate with Mobile Health Program staff to plan and execute travel logistics and optimize route planning while maintaining clear communication regarding arrival time delays or environmental conditions that may affect scheduling or Mobile Health Program visits.
  • Monitor and maintain vehicle safety equipment (e.g. fire extinguishers first aid kits wheel chocks) and follow organizational safety protocols policies and procedures including those related to inclement weather medical emergencies and community site hazards.
  • Represent Lurie Childrens and the Magoon Institute with professionalism respect and cultural humility serving as a welcoming approachable presence to families community members and partner organizations during mobile visits.
  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Illinois Drivers License. CDL preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional driving experience operating large commercial vehicles in an urban environment required; experience in healthcare mobile outreach or community health settings preferred.
  • Clean driving record and ability to pass pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Basic knowledge of routine vehicle maintenance and inspection procedures and ability to conduct safety checks and recognize mechanical or operational issues. Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to vehicle function and mobile site setup.
  • Familiarity with applicable traffic laws and Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines required familiarity with Chicago neighborhoods and traffic patterns preferred.
  • Excellent time management skills to ensure punctual arrival and efficient site transitions.
  • Strong and effective communication and interpersonal skills accuracy and discretion for working with staff and engaging with community members.
  • Ability to take initiative work independently follow detailed schedules and routes adapt to changing schedules weather conditions and community site logistics and manage all responsibilities with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability and follow-through.
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals from different backgrounds and disciplines and build relationships across all levels of the organization.

Pay Range

$18.00-$27.00 Hourly

At Lurie Childrens we are committed to competitive and fair compensation aligned with market rates and internal equity reflecting individual contributions experience and expertise. The pay range for this job indicates minimum and maximum targets for the position.
