Job Description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated senior-level Marine Mechanical Engineer (Propulsion) to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)s Ship Design Team in Baltimore MD. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with developing ship propulsion and control systems machinery arrangements weight assessments and/or conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs standards and regulations.

Typical Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support and documentation design develop and evaluate the operation of marine vessels ship machinery and related equipment to include but not limited to: power supply and propulsion systems.
  • Research and develop ship propulsion systems to include but not limited to: diesels gas turbines diesel-electric systems propellers rudders thrusters gears shafts bearings seals noise vibration and interfaces with dynamic positioning systems and apply to applicable design and requirements.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
  • Design develop and evaluate operation of marine vessels shipboard propulsion machinery and review and develop technical data packages provide oversight on development of machinery arrangements conduct and oversee trade studies.

Location: Full time onsite at USCG Surfaces Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) in Baltimore MD.

Travel:Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.

Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education qualifications and experience.

Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g. confined spaces ladders hatches) or vision.

US Citizenship Required:Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment.

Security Clearance Eligibility Required:This position requires a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred);OR be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire.

Typical Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelors degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or another relevant technical engineering or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • At least six (6) years of progressive experience in Marine Mechanical Engineering fields.
    • Overall experience should include developing ship propulsion and control systems machinery arrangements weight assessments and conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components.
  • At least one (1) year of experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs required.
  • Knowledge of ABS NVR and commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communications skills.

Additional Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Masters degree in Marine or Mechanical engineeringor another relevant technical engineering or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs preferred.
