The Environmental Sustainability Manager follows the guidance and direction from Hearst Group and its environmental sustainability overview. As a media company our first responsibility is to educate our audience with the science based environmental sustainability best practices. Reducing our carbon emissions is also a priority. Based on UK government environmental regulations and / or Hearst Magazines UK advertising market evolution and requirements the Environmental Sustainability Manager proposes and implements the necessary initiatives approved by Hearst UK HMI and Hearst Group environmental sustainability leads. Based on local market needs the Environmental Sustainability Manager will support the adequate initiatives with the local sustainability leads at Hearst Magazines (HM) Spain HM Italy HM Netherlands HM China HM Taiwan and HM Japan.

The Role

With Hearst Magazines UK 2.5 days per week -

Keeping up to date with environmental regulations:
  • Staying informed about the latest environmental regulations and ensuring the organisation is following relevant laws and regulations such as ESOS (energy reporting) CMA (greenwashing ad content) EUDR (deforestation regulation).
Conducting environmental assessments and action plans:
  • Identifying and analysing the companys direct environmental impact such as carbon footprint (scope 1 2 and 3) energy use waste management water use business travel and other relevant factors; and indirect environmental impact such as publishing information about climate change and the environmental impact of specific services and products.
  • Developing and implementing environmental policies and strategies:Setting targets defining objectives and establishing guidelines and procedures for both direct and indirect impacts.
  • Creating sustainability initiatives: Designing and implementing programs and projects to reduce the companys direct environmental impact such as promoting recycling using renewable energy and other sustainable practices; and supporting commercial marketing and editorial teams to promote an environmentally sustainable lifestyle.
Engaging with internal stakeholders:
  • Engaging with Hearst UK ELT: Strengthening governance of environmental sustainability initiatives and embedding environmental sustainability within Hearst UKs purpose together with social sustainability.
  • Engaging with Commercial: Consulting on and reviewing sustainability brief responses to clients to ensure Hearst aligns with CMA green claims codes and accurately presents environmental performance.
  • Close work with the Good Housekeeping Institute team: Supporting sustainability initiatives including LCA analysis and testing protocols in line with industry standards.
  • Working with the events team: Harnessing the BOSS tool to track measure and improve event sustainability.
  • Running Environmental Editorial Rep programme:Providing training resources and editing copy in line with the CMA green claims code.
  • Educating employees: Providing training and communication programs to promote a culture of environmental sustainability awareness within the organisation and supporting staff in understanding why/what/how to communicate to our audience for an environmentally sustainable lifestyle in coordination with HR department.
  • Running internal sustainability communications: Leading internal and external communications around sustainability including newsletters future reports website updates and contributing to all-staff communications in coordination with PR/Communication department.
Engaging with externalstakeholders:
  • Collaborating with suppliers customers and community groups to promote sustainable practices and achieve environmental goals.
Monitoring and reporting progress:
  • Leading Planet Hearst UK.
  • Tracking and evaluating the effectiveness of environmental sustainability initiatives within ISO14001:2015 EMS and reporting progress to management and stakeholders; managing EMS ISO14001 requirements (updating registers audits certification and liaising with our third-party environmental consultancy).
  • Updating Hearst UK ESOS annual report.
  • Updating Hearst UK annual carbon assessment in coordination with HMI and our carbon consultancy as well as Hearst UK SBTi reduction target achievement.

With Hearst Magazines International 2.5 days a week -

  • Engaging with HMI business units: Following guidance from HMI and Hearst Corporate and contributing to relevant initiatives aligned with the list above for Hearst Magazines UK.
