Facility Energy Technician 2

Woodburn - MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility

Are you a skilled trades professional with experience maintaining complex building systems who is also motivated by the opportunity to mentor youth The Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) is seeking a Facility Energy Technician 2 to join our Physical Plant Operations team at MacLaren Youth Correctional this journey-level role you will help ensure the safe and efficient operation of OYAs energy systemsincluding boilers HVAC/R and water treatmentwhile also training and supervising youth work crews in valuable trade skills. This is meaningful work where your technical expertise directly supports safe environments for staff and youth while contributing to OYAs mission to protect the public reduce crime and provide opportunities for reformation.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and repair HVAC/R and boiler systems: Operate calibrate and repair heating ventilation air conditioning refrigeration and steam boiler systems ensuring safe and efficient performance.

  • Monitor water systems: Operate and repair wastewater distribution and water treatment systems including inspections sampling and reporting.

  • Perform building maintenance and repairs: Carry out a variety of maintenance tasks such as plumbing carpentry painting plastering and general facility upkeep.

  • Support emergency and preventive maintenance needs: Respond to urgent equipment failures weather-related facility issues and perform routine preventive maintenance.

  • Supervise and train youth work crews: Instruct youth in safe tool use building maintenance and trade skills while reinforcing positive work habits accountability and workplace safety.

  • Ensure safety and security: Maintain tool control monitor youth activities and enforce security measures to support a safe correctional environment.

What You Need To Qualify:

  • Completion of a recognized HVAC/R apprenticeship program or a two-year HVAC/R accredited trade school in heating and air-conditioning or refrigeration AND one year of full-time experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position; OR

  • Three years of full-time experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education training and experience.

Special Qualifications:

  • Drivers license required: Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

  • Small Water System Operator certification within 6 months of hire.

  • EPA certification within 6 months of hire.

Required Skills:

  • Provide polite and professional service to youth staff contractors and other customers of the facility

  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instruction policies and guidelines.

  • Read and perform work using blueprints and shop drawings.

  • Must have the fine motor skills required to safely use test equipment instruments and tools

  • The analytical ability to resolve complex mechanical problems and to contribute creatively to problem solving is required.

  • Ability to adapt to change and be able to give and receive feedback.

Note: You do not need to have all of these qualities to be eligible for this position.

  • Experience performing maintenance and repairs on commercial HVAC/R systems and boilers.

  • Experience improvising and adapting when urgent maintenance needs require quick problem-solving and flexibility.

  • Experience inspecting malfunctioning equipment and determining a clear plan for repair modification or replacement.

  • Working knowledge of maintenance procedures and safety precautions that ensure safe practices at all times.

  • Experience working with diverse populations including youth and staff with respect and cultural awareness.

  • Strong computer and communication skills including using maintenance management software email and professional written and verbal communication.

  • Boiler Control Endorsement
