Position Information

Stewards of Our Urban Forest will Enhance Hawaiis Natural Beauty and Bring Communities Together

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Division of Urban Forestry is hiring for one (1)Nursery Worker II position located in Honolulu. Nursery Worker IIs supervise and participate in the propagation cultivation fertilization and care of plants in a nursery.

What Youll Do

Perform a variety of work such as the implementation and maintenance of landscaping in planting strips traffic medial and islands park grounds and bikeways and other areas.
Perform the planting and maintenance of beautification projects and nurseries island-wide.
Prepare plant beds and media mixes combining soil compost fertilizer and other amendments.
Keep assigned facilities clean and neat in order to minimize spread of plant diseases safety hazards or undesirable conditions.
Supervise the daily duties of subordinates and the implementation of various tasks.
Perform other related duties as required.

Special Work Requirements

Handles and uses chemicals and works in areas treated with chemicals.
May work solely in remote secluded mountainous areas where there is no drinking water restroom or electricity.
Required to work after hours or on weekends to apply pesticides herbicides etc. for special projects and events and emergency callouts.
Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants including the propagation of various plants.

Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of a variety of trees and plants their care and propagation; practices tools equipment and materials used in nursery work; plant diseases and pests and effective methods of controlling them; various commercial fertilizers and their use etc.

Substitution: Successful completion of the AG149 Plant Propagation course from Windward Community College or similar plant propagation coursework from a regionally-accredited college or university may substitute for the required experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of an appropriate valid Hawaii State drivers license as required.

Valid Hawaii drivers license (Type 3) prior to appointment.
Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) prior to appointment.
Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test prior to appointment.
Department of Transportation Medical Examiners certificate prior to appointment.
First Aid/CPR/AED certificates prior to completion of probation.
Commercial drivers license (Class A) prior to completion of probation.
Certificate for Commercial Applicators of Restricted Pesticides prior to completion of probation.
Forklift certification prior to completion of probation.

NOTE: Some of the above certificates are obtained during the pre-employment medical evaluation process. Any required licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated above and maintained throughout the course of employment in the position.
