Project Overview

The project focuses on creating a comprehensive overview of all PLC systems used across the plant. This includes documenting vendors models firmware and software versions as well as checking and verifying backup availability for each PLC addition the project aims to identify obsolete or near end-of-life PLCs and suggest suitable replacements. The communication networks between PLCs and SCADA/HMI systems will also be evaluated to ensure reliability and cybersecurity. Finally the project will result in a long-term modernization and migration roadmap for the plants PLC systems.


Project Goals

To list and document all PLCs used across the plant including vendor model firmware and software versions.
To check and verify backup availability for each PLC program.
To identify obsolete or near end-of-life PLCs and recommend suitable replacements.
To evaluate communication networks between PLCs and SCADA/HMI systems for reliability and cybersecurity.
To propose a long-term modernization and migration roadmap for PLC systems.

Skills & Competencies

The student undertaking this project will develop and strengthen the following skills:

Technical skills: PLC hardware/software knowledge program backup handling communication protocols (Profibus Profinet Modbus Ethernet/IP etc.).
Analytical skills: Obsolescence analysis lifecycle management risk prioritization.
Industrial knowledge: Understanding of automation architectures SCADA integration cybersecurity considerations.
Software competencies: PLC programming tools (Siemens TIA Portal RSLogix/Studio 5000 Schneider Unity/Control Expert etc.) documentation tools (Excel).
Soft skills: Documentation technical reporting communication with maintenance and automation teams strategic planning.

Duration & Requirements
Duration: Negotiable earliest start January 2026.
Location: On-site at AkzoNobel Industrial Coatings in Malm.
Thesis must meet academic requirements.
