PRIMARY PURPOSE:
A Literacy Specialist in Texas is a certified educator who provides expert support to improve
student literacy and reading achievement. This role includes curriculum development
assessment coordination and instructional coaching. The Literacy Specialist collaborates
closely with teachers and administrators to model best practices build capacity in evidence-
based reading instruction and ensure alignment with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
(TEKS). Certification in the Texas Reading Academies is required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certifications
- Bachelors degree in education (Masters in Reading Literacy or Curriculum and Instruction is preferred).
- Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with ESL.
- Completion of Texas Reading Academics (required).
Knowledge & Skills
- Deep understanding of the Science of Reading TEKS intervention models and assessment tools.
- Strong communication collaboration and leadership skills.
Preferred Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of classroom teaching experience with a strong background in literacy instruction.
- Proven experience in coaching teachers and leading professional development.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Other:
- Teacher Coaching and Professional Development
- Work with and coach teachers on effective reading strategies and literacy interventions for all leaders.
- Model lessons co-teach and provide in-class support to build teacher capacity in delivering structured reading instruction.
- Provide training for new and veteran teachers on reading pedagogy curriculum tools assessment practices and instructional interventions.
- Facilitate content-based professional learning communities (CBPLs) focused on reading instruction intervention and data-driven practices.
- Provide targeted differentiated reading interventions using structured literacy and research-based practices.
- Work with and coach teachers on effective support for students with identified reading difficulties including those with dyslexia or limited English proficiency.
- Assessment and Data Analysis
- Administer and interpret formal and informal reading assessments.
- Analyze data and monitor student progress and guide instructional decision-making.
- Collaborate with teachers to design and implement common assessments aligned with TEKS.
- Curriculum Development and Instructional Planning
- Lead or contribute to the development of:
- Six-week instructional calendars
- Year-at-a-Glance (YAG) documents
- Support the implementation of research-based reading programs that align with campus and district expectations.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Work in partnership with administrators interventionists special education staff and families to support individualized literacy needs.
- Participate in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as a literacy expert.
- Communicate student progress and instructional recommendations to stakeholders.
- Literacy Leadership and School Culture
- Promote a campus-wide culture of reading by leading literacy initiatives events and family engagement efforts.
- Assist in the selection and integration of high-quality instructional materials and digital reading resources.
- Regular on-site attendance.
- Continuous Learning and Compliance
- Stay current with the Science of Reading TEKS updates HB 3 mandates and best practices in literacy instruction.
- Complete ongoing professional development as required by the district and state.
