Job Description

Do you have a background in fluid mechanics rheology and/or contact mechanics Are you independent creative and eager to take initiatives Do you enjoy working in an interdisciplinary research group and interacting with colleagues with diverse backgrounds The Institute of Physics (IoP) is looking for ambitious postdocs. Your research is part of the Soft Matter Group: Us!

We are seeking exceptional candidates for a postdoc in the Soft Matter group at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Daniel Bonn (please do not contact him if you have a question the contact details are at the bottom of the page). This fully funded experimental project aims at deepening our understanding of physical mechanisms involved in e.g. liquid sprays emulsions and solid friction with applications in pharmaceuticals food industry agriculture and semiconductors.

This is what you will do

You will carry experimental work in the lab from bibliographical research setup and protocol design to data analysis. We ask you to become independent by taking initiatives and developing you own creative ideas. We also ask you to take an active role in group activities which includes presenting your work at our weekly group meeting and ensuring that the lab equipment remains in good conditions.

We offer a temporary employment contract for 38 hours per week for a period of 12 months. Upon suitability for the position as evidenced by a positive final evaluation as well as available sufficient funding in the project temporary employment contract can be extended for 2 years. The preferred starting date is as soon as possible therefore we will invite potential candidates for interviews on an ongoing base.

The gross monthly salary based on 38 hours per week and dependent on relevant experience ranges between 3546 to 5538 (Scale 10).This does not include 8% holiday allowance and 83% year-end allowance. The UFO profile Postdoc 4 is applicable. A favourable tax agreement the 30% ruling may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Universities of the Netherlands is applicable.

You will work in this team

TheFaculty of Science has a student body of around 8000 as well as 1800 members of staff working in education research or support services. Researchers and students at the Faculty of Science are fascinated by every aspect of how the world works be it elementary particles the birth of the universe or the functioning of the brain.

The Institute of Physics (IoP) of the Faculty of Science combines the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute (WZI) the Institute of Theoretical Physics (ITFA) and the Institute for High Energy Physics (IHEF) and is one of the large research institutes of the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam. The mission of IoP is to carry out excellent research in the field of experimental and theoretical physics to provide inspiring teaching within the physics and other curricula and to transfer our knowledge of and enthusiasm for physics to society. The IoP has over 50 faculty and 180 researchers in total. The combination with the NWO Institutes at Amsterdam Science Park constitutes the largest physics hub in the Netherlands and is an international centre of excellence.

TheVan der Waals - Zeeman Institute for Experimental Physics (IoP-WZI) is part of the IoP and home to three research clusters: Quantum Gases & Quantum Information (QG&QI) Quantum Materials (QMat) and Soft Matter (SM).
