Job Description Summary
The Fire Safety Officer is directly supervised by the Chapman University Fire Marshal and works collaboratively with the Fire Safety Specialist. The Fire Safety Officer conducts inspections of campus property fire protection and extinguishing systems to ensure compliance with applicable codes ordinances and standards. Conduct and assist with fire safety presentations and education for staff students and faculty. Inspect and maintain life safety equipment on campus property. Perform fire safety officer standby for special events student film production and other fire watch needs. Conduct hot work inspections special event inspections and student film inspections. Respond and assist with campus fire or medical emergencies as a certified Basic Life Support provider. Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within time and budget constraints. Thorough written verbal and interpersonal communication skills including political acumen and skill to communicate effectively in a diverse environment. This position is scheduled to work a 4/10 alternative work schedule.
Responsibilities
Conducting campus inspections of buildings ensuring compliance with building and fire code regulations. Conduct regular audits and inspections of fire equipment on campus. Fire safety standby for special events and film productions as required by state and local regulations. Other duties as assigned. Communicate and coordinate with other university departments; Teach fire safety fire extinguisher use etc. Conduct fire drills campus-wide. Liaison with the Orange Fire department and other state regulatory agencies to ensure campus compliance with federal state and local laws.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED equivalent Must possess certificate of completion or in the process of completing certificate from State Fire Marshall for Fire Inspector 1A 1B 1C 1D Must obtain Motion Picture/TV FSO training within 6 months of hire. Skills in the operation of a motor vehicle under emergency and other Public Safety related conditions with the ability to understand and follow University safe driving procedures and the California vehicle code. Accurate report writing skills including the proper use of grammar punctuation and spelling. Ability to quickly assess a situation and determine the appropriate course of action. Ability to interpret and follow University and fire safety codes regulations and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly in a helpful effective and professional manner in person by telephone and by two-way radio. Legible handwriting such that all logs and reports can be easily read by others. Technical skills to learn and use enterprise systems and departmental tools. Excellent interpersonal skills to work and serve a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels both inside and outside the University. Ability to use tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality. Knowledge of federal and state laws and guidelines as they apply to fire prevention. Knowledge of campus buildings roadways parking lots fire and intrusion alarm systems and keys. Must have and maintain in good standing valid California Driver License.
