GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is currently seeking a Principal Bridge Engineer in Cheyenne Wyoming to supervise direct and guide a Bridge Design Squad to produce economic efficient and safe transportation structures including bridges box culverts overhead sign structures retaining walls and other highway-related structures.

Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the Old Wests history. The city offers nearby mountain biking skiing hiking fishing hunting and other outdoor activities. Cheyenne is also the home to the Daddy of em All Cheyenne Frontier Days held the last week of July. Wyoming is one of only seven states with no state income tax.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.
  • Oversees the design and contract plan production of complex steel and concrete bridges overhead sign structures concrete box culverts retaining walls and other highway-related structures
  • Supervises a Design Squad composed of engineers and engineering technicians
  • Performs personnel-related activities including mentoring and providing feedback to employees and recommending personnel for promotions
  • Prepares performance appraisals and individual development plans; verifies time cards
  • Coordinates and approves leave; counsels employees when needed; aids in interviewing hiring and promotional decisions; and verifies travel expenses
  • Determines preliminary structure work based on mathematical modeling survey data various technical reports engineering judgment and on-site inspections
  • Prepares economic comparisons Reconnaissance and Structure Selection/Rehabilitation Reports and a variety of correspondence to other Programs and outside agencies
  • Performs on-site inspections to assess structure condition and needed work; determines and selects cost-effective structure types and sizes
  • Affix professional engineering stamp to completed Structure Selection/Rehabilitation Reports
  • Manages and plans assignments within the Design Squad composed of engineers and engineering technicians; responsible for the design and plan preparation of structure projects
  • Estimates the time required for each phase of the design and detailing process
  • Assigns tasks so projects move from designer to drafter to finished project in a smooth and orderly fashion; utilizes the Primavera Project Scheduling Software to assist in this task and to provide a continual update of project status and squad resources
  • Monitors the time and dollars of professional resources required to complete the engineering of a project
  • Attends lectures seminars and staff conferences to broaden knowledge and experience; participates and/or supervises the development of draft policies standards and specifications both within the Program and Department-wide
  • Provides input into the annual program budget; inputs into and monitors progress towards Program goals

Qualifications



  • Knowledge of the national bridge inspection standards and bridge element level ratings to assess the condition and rehabilitation of structures
  • Knowledge of drafting principles practices standards and office policies that relate to structural detailing
  • Knowledge of the WYDOT project/plan development procedures and project flow charts
  • Knowledge of engineering fundamentals relating to highway geometrics hydraulic design soil engineering construction practices AASHTO OSHA AISC ACI PCI and NDS specifications and WYDOT standard specifications
  • Knowledge of personnel rules and the ability to interpret and implement rules and regulations
  • Skills in managing personnel and work activities to establish work schedules and meet project deadlines
  • Skills in the principles application and interpretation of structural engineering design and theory to ensure uniformity and compliance with AASHTO design specifications Program policies and Department standards
  • Ability to work well with all members of the Bridge Program other Department Programs outside agencies and the public
  • Ability to analyze solve and give direction on both technical and nontechnical problems
  • Ability to understand structural computations and recognize the theory as the basis of their use
  • Ability to communicate effectively through both verbal and written means to relate specific concepts and ideas to outside agencies and public partners and to provide direction to engineers and technicians
  • Ability to effectively plan organize oversee and monitor work schedules and project files
  • Ability to give attention to detail and work under pressure


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:
Bachelors Degree (in Engineering)
Experience:
2-4 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Project Engineer
Certificates Licenses Registrations:
Professional Engineers (PE) License Required at time of hire - (Wyoming PE required within one year of hire date.)

Necessary Special Requirements




  • Primarily office-based with occasional field visits to project sites.
  • Site work may involve exposure to weather rough terrain and construction environments requiring the use of safety gear.
  • Some walking climbing and light lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required.

  • This position is an At-Will position
  • The Wyoming Department of Transportation is a Drug-Free Workplace.
  • **Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus
    • Acceptance of a permanent full-time non-exempt/exempt position posted for public recruitment
    • Temporary employees accepting a full-time or part-time permanent position
    • Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity - recruitment must have been opened to the public
    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive; funds will be recouped from final pay.
    • Internal candidates must remain in the position for at least one (1) year from their promotion date.
    • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
    • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period they would be required to pay the bonus back.
