Description

The Manager is actively involved in the selection hiring mentoring and training of blood bank (and laboratory) staff. The Manager strives to promote harmonious and effective relationships within the laboratory/blood budgets and evaluates and implements new clinical techniques. The Manager is able to rely on extensive experience and sound judgment to effectively accomplish responsibilities. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected along with the ability to lead develop and direct others.



Responsibilities
  1. Leadership
    1. Effectively selects hires trains mentors develops and leads the transfusion services staff. Develops and maintains effective training processes for transfusion services staff and students. Assigns and monitors staffing scheduling and work practices according to department policy; makes necessary adjustments to maintain productivity levels. Takes measures to ensure adherence to best practices and departmental procedures.
    2. Schedules and assigns work to staff members monitors work quality and quantity and ensures efficient departmental operations by providing back-up supervisory support when needed.
    3. Oversees the staff of their departments promotes effective relationships within the hospital monitors work quality and quantity and assists in the preparation of performance appraisals.
    4. Maintain appropriate records on employee attendance for payroll and is primary timekeeper for transfusion services staff. Also serves as back-up for laboratory.
    5. Addresses employee behavior issues in a timely and effective manner. Holds all staff members accountable to the standards of both departmental and facility policies regarding time and attendance behavior and other policies.
  2. Program Management and Daily Operations
    1. Performs at an acceptable productivity level when assisting in developing preparing and recommending annual departmental operating and capital budgets and monitors the economical use and procurement of equipment supplies and personnel. Ensures that periodic equipment maintenance is carried out in order to control hospital and departmental costs and conserve all hospital resources. Investigates new techniques practices and equipment in an effort to identify ways of maximizing the quality and efficiency of health care services provided to patients.
    2. Assists in planning short- and long-term projects and provides feedback to employees thus providing adequate communication and understanding.
    3. Coordinates plans and utilizes time efficiently in an effort to prioritize and organize duties while remaining flexible to meet the needs of the laboratory service customers. Maintains an inventory of supplies in work areas and requests and orders supplies as necessary to ensure efficient departmental operations and avoid duplication of energy and services whenever possible.
    4. Functions cooperatively with the Medical Director in meeting the clinical and technical needs of the department and its customers.
    5. Prepares policy and procedure manuals which incorporate the requirements and regulations of all licensing and accrediting agencies (CAP AABB JCOAH and FDA) as well as the directives of the department and the facility. These must include protocols and limitations established by respective vendors and manufacturers according to their suggested guidelines.
  3. Performance Improvement and Quality
    1. Quality is paramount in all aspects of daily function and work processes to include assisting in the development and implementation of continuous quality improvement programs and participation in multi-disciplinary CQI efforts. Promotes and encourages the growth and development of all personnel by encouraging their participation in approved continuing education activities and advocates continuing education as a means of promoting the high-quality services provided by all departmental personnel.
  4. Other Duties as Assigned
    1. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
    2. Consistently performs 12 organizational Service Standards focused on Values Service and Quality.




Qualifications

Experience - 3 years as a Medical Technologist and previous supervisory experience
Education - Graduate of an accredited school of Medical Technology
