Job Summary

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is seeking a 100% Ophthalmic Clinical Specialist I to perform technical and optical testing as a portion of the complete ocular exam in addition to obtaining patient histories meds and allergies for the supervising physician. This position will work an 8 hour shift between the hours of 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.

The Department ofOphthalmology and Visual Sciences intends to hire at either the Ophthalmic Technician non-COA certified classification or OphthalmicClinical Specialist I COA certified classification based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Duties to include:

  • Demonstrate refraction competency with optometrist.
  • Transpose spectacle prescriptions from minus to plus cylinder.
  • Responsible for knowing basic pharmacology of ocular medications instilling multiple diagnostic drops during the exam per protocol.
  • Perform manual keratometery testing.
  • Answers phone calls triages patient complaints working them into clinic as needed.
  • Able to perform advanced applanation tonometry for corneal irregularity problems or patients with high astigmatism.
  • Assist with ocular specimen collection using various types of media for microbiology.
  • Maintains technological equipment calling for repairs and troubleshooting as needed. Maintains equipment as needed by changing bulbs arranging repairs.
  • Assists physicians with procedures including obtaining cultures tap and injection procedures.
  • Assists physician with scheduling procedures.
  • Ensure that quality control testing is complete and documented.
  • Participate in interview process for new hires and provide feedback.
  • Consult with the clinic leadership regarding staffing for the day and week.
  • Address patient complaints or be a resource for service recovery.
  • Function as an Epic super user.
  • Train other staff.

***External hires only in addition to your base salary we are offering a sign-on incentive of $1500 payable in one installment. The payment will be made on the first of the month following completion of 60 days of employment. Should you terminate employment within 24 months you will be responsible for the prorated repayment of the sign-on incentive. The signed agreement will be processed upon hire. Current UI employees are not eligible.***

Schedule: Preferred schedule Monday Friday 8:00a-5:00p. Schedule may be modified to fit candidate and clinic needs.

COA Certified (OphthalmicClinicalSpecialist I) Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Three years of health care experience involving direct patient care including some use and maintenance of specialized medical equipment or a combination of related education and experience.
  • COA certification through JCAHPO
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and abilities

Non-COA Certified (Ophthalmic Technician) Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Three years of health care experience involving direct patient care including some use and maintenance of specialized medical equipment with at least one year of the prior experience at the level of a Clinical Technician II or equivalent or a combination of related education and experience.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 18 months of ophthalmic patient care
  • COA certification through JCAHPO (if not COA certified)
  • COT certification through JCAHPO (if COA certified)
  • Pediatric experience is highly desirable
