This posting is for a Youth Services Librarian at Enka-Candler Library part of Buncombe County Public Libraries. Responsibilities of this role include planning and presenting youth programming for ages 0-18 hosting regular story times managing the youth collection for the branch and maintaining circulation and reference duties shared by all Youth Services Librarian will also attend monthly meetings with a county-wide team of other youth services librarians from across our 12-branch library system led by the Youth Services Manager.
Enka-Candler Library is a vibrant and welcoming community center that serves both rural and urban areas in the west end of Buncombe library staff works to provide a friendly comfortable environment while serving the public and building camaraderie with patrons. We cultivate strong partnerships with local organizations including YMCA of Western North Carolina Books Alive Read2Succeed Buncombe Partnership for Children United Way Our VOICE Helpmate and Goodwill of Northwest NC. The schedule for this position is Tuesday Saturday (40 hours per week) at the Enka-Candler Library Branch location. Some flexibility may be possible but is not guaranteed. Staff members should know that schedules could change in the future as library branch hours across the system continue to evolve.
The current schedule is:
Tuesday - 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday - 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Thursday - 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Friday - 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Saturday - 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Purpose of the position:

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of functions including staffing customer service desks office support clerical work and activities involved in providing public and technical services in a library environment. Responsible for planning and implementing weekly programming and collection development materials for specialized service areas.

Minimum Education Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): Masters degree in library science information sciences or a related field; or bachelors degree and two (2) years of experience in a library or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements: The work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals priorities and needs. The work is primarily light work requiring exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally the following physical abilities are required: fingering grasping handling hearing mental acuity reaching repetitive motion speaking standing talking visual acuity and walking.

Essential Functions of the position:

  • Plan present and manage special events throughout the year including age-appropriate activities clubs paid performers and presentations by community partners and organizations; may collaborate with other entities to coordinate events and activities.
  • Manage an annual programming budget to provide events throughout the year including age-appropriate activities clubs paid performers and presentations by community partners and organizations.
  • Prepare written and visual promotional materials for flyers press releases and social media posts; Create visual library displays.
  • Assist with collection development by researching and ordering new books culling books and reordering damaged materials. Provide reference service for a specialized area or collection; assist library users in utilizing a variety of automated and printed sources; may refer complex in-depth subject requests to other professional librarians for additional research.
  • Check materials in and out maintain files of materials in circulation maintain reserve lists and hold notices and notify patrons when materials are available for pickup.
  • Perform a variety of clerical tasks to include but not limited to answering phones responding to routine information requests assisting patrons in completion of forms assisting with maintenance of records and other related documents typing various forms and memos and filing; Perform cash register transactions for library fines and fees and reconcile cash register receipts with end-of-day proceeds and make bank deposits.
  • Attend meetings and participate in community outreach to local organizations through presentations educational activities or oral storytelling.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library policies procedures and operations.
  • Knowledge of applicable functional areas in relation to overall operation of library.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of library and information science.
  • Ability to use and demonstrate understanding of library applications (internal and external) in a networked environment to record and retrieve information.
  • Ability to prepare and communicate routine information about assigned functional areas.
  • Ability to listen and respond appropriately to non-routine inquiries about services offered supplementary resources or other relevant information.
  • Ability to develop basic instructional materials/finding aids that effectively communicate library practices and technical terminology to facilitate staff and patron use of library technology resources and facilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via a variety of means to a variety of audiences and audience sizes (one-on-one and with groups)
