Management Trainee Purpose: Colonnas Shipyard is seeking new Management Trainees to join our operations in Norfolk VA. The 18-month Management Trainee program is a full-time immersive work opportunity providing hands-on trade/shop experience (including rotation through all key trades) and project management of various shipyard/industrial fabrication contracts exposing candidates to all facets of production operations. Additionally Management Trainees spend time with executive leadership Safety Compliance Subcontracting/Procurement Material Handling/Management Facilities Human Resources etc. while developing their leadership and project management skills. Upon completion of initial rotational training each Management Trainee is provided a 6-month trial period assignment supporting their best matched program. Successful completion of the program may result in assignment to various progressive managerial roles supporting shipyard/industrial fabrication operations. Job Description: - Learn and assist in key steps of project management to include personnel material equipment and facilities management; establishing project priorities and work sequences; and proper workload distribution through appropriate resource allotment.
- Gain exposure to and understand the complexity of shipyard & industrial operations as it relates to government and commercial contracts.
- Assist leadership with management of shipyard & industrial operations to include safety and timely installation modification and repair of complex equipment and systems.
- Become familiar with the various craft trades involved in daily Company operations.
- Conduct ship checks; attend meetings; read and interpret detailed work items drawings and customer requirements.
- Gather and interpret data to prepare reports analysis and documentation for higher level department personnel. Verify source material for authenticity.
- Use data documentation and analysis to develop procedures for future projects.
- Interact with various Company personnel to include vice presidents directors program management (superintendents project managers etc.) craft managers and supervisors safety managers chemists customers and others in support of daily operations.
- Assist with monitoring contractors and work sites during projects.
- Participate in networking and community outreach events.
- Work with a diverse workforce and functional groups both independently and within teams to complete core responsibilities.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) to include hard hat safety glasses steel toed footwear and when necessary a respirator.
Qualifications: - Must have a bachelors degree.
- Must be proficient with core Microsoft 365 programs (specifically Word Excel Outlook Project).
- Must demonstrate strong communication; verbal and written.
- Must be able to work as part of a team.
- Must have regular reliable attendance.
Desired Qualifications: - Bachelors degree required (see above). Majors in Maritime Operations Engineering Management Business or other closely related program preferred.
- Prefer strong analytical/problem-solving skills with well-developed administrative/organizational/detail orientation skills.
- Knowledge of the Maritime industry and its regulations programs policies and practices is preferred.
Security Requirements: - U.S. Citizenship Required.
- Must be able to gain and maintain access to government installations.
- Position requires successful completion of a background check.
Travel Requirements: - Minimal Travel; 10% or less.
Physical Requirements: - Must be able to lift carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders work in extreme temperature environments aboard ships in shipyards under industrial conditions and in confined spaces including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat humidity noise and dirty conditions working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job you may frequently be required to stand walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and required to reach with hands and arms climb and balance stoop squat kneel twist and crawl.
- Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
- Occasional use of respirator.
- Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding cutting or working with molten metal.
- Will require work to be done in an office environment occasionally requiring prolonged periods of sitting and typing.
