Certified Group Exercise Instructor
Job Description:
Certified Group Exercise Instructors are responsible for providing safe and effective movement experiences to VCU students and Recreation and Well-Being members.
Location: MCV Campus Recreation & Larrick Student Center
Supervisor: Nadine Madison Group Exercise Coordinator
Starting Pay Rate: $17.00 per hour
Desired Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Currently certified as a group exercise instructor
Knowledge and application of proper technique and form for exercises
Ability to motivate adults
Creative in designing a variety of exercise classes
Knowledge and application of teaching adults
An understanding of facility characteristics rules policies and procedures
Good customer service skills communication and decision making skills
Ability to follow instructions
Required Licensure or Certification(s):
Current nationally recognized certification (preferred organizations include: AFAA ACE ACSM HFS/HFI AFPA NASM and NSCA/CSCS or specialty e.g. Les Mills Zumba etc.).
Current certification through the American Red Cross in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid (or equivalent)
o If not certified Recreation & Well-Being will provide Professional Rescuer course
o Employee must receive certification within 90 days of hire
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Commit to at least 2 classes per week with flexibility in schedule
Teach supportive fitness classes to a diverse population
Be familiar with basic fitness principles and application to exercise
Adapt your teaching approaches to the age experience and ability of participants so they can meet course objectives
Ensure the health and safety of the participants by making sure all teaching and practice areas are free of hazards and materials and equipment are safe
Communicate regularly with participants as appropriate to ensure they are aware of the progress
Recognize and respond effectively in emergencies in accordance with facility procedures
Report facility and safety equipment issues
Be enthusiastic and have fun
Educate the patrons on the rewards of a life-long commitment of exercise that can be fun
Be professional courteous prompt prepared self-confident enthusiastic and motivational for each of the classes and activities you conduct
Participate in trainings and other meetings that are required
Other requirements:
Hours are flexible and will include some evening and weekend work. Employees can expect to work 3-15 hours per week based on their availability. Maximum of 20 hours per week.
