Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health offers 12 paid holidays medical dental vision and life

The Chesapeake Health Department is seeking a Nutritionist Senior to join the Women Infants and childrens (WIC) program. This position works primarily at main WIC site at Great Bridge as a Lead Nutritionist. Primarily performs nutritional interviews to determine client eligibility for the WIC program. Position also requires performing income eligibility and lab duties routinely. Uses VENA techniques to assess readiness motivation & barriers to behavioral change. Dietary goals are established & documented in care plan. Prescribes dietary food packages in accordance with WIC protocols. Helps plan and schedule nutrition coverage for WIC clinic. Monitors patient flow and clinic scheduling to meet the needs of the clients. Helps train new staff on lab protocols and procedures. Ensures security of WIC EBT cards and all other related supplies. Investigates and manages separation of duty reports CAP orders online applicants delayed signature screen internet sale of WIC formula reminder calls and missed appointment reports etc. Helps evaluates the quality of customer service at site. Handles questions and complaints with participants. Performs quality assurance audits on a regular basis using WIC audit tools. Orders/ approves nutrition education materials and forms from the central office. Relays and implements policy and procedures of the Chesapeake WIC program with all staff. Assists with development implementation and evaluation of the annual WIC nutrition service plan. Dietary goals will be established and documented for each WIC client in care plan according to state policy. Patient counseling specific to the individuals nutritional needs will be provided and documented in care plan according to state guidelines. Assists/plans quarterly nutrition education classes (lesson plan talking points bulletin board and handouts). Facilitates nutrition education classes to applicants/participants through group discussion or a child-focused setting. Promotes breastfeeding; schedules applicants to breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding support groups; refers pregnant and breastfeeding moms to districts breastfeeding coordinator DBE or peer counselor.

Minimum Qualifications

-Knowledge of nutritional programs policies & procedures; current therapeutic diets principles of nutrition nutrition standards & application to public health
-Skills in use of electronic health records; counseling techniques including motivational interviewing & participant centered approaches
-Ability to supervise schedule & evaluate personnel; assess clinic flow for efficiency & effectiveness; promote breastfeeding; perform comprehensive nutrition assessments; identify nutrition risks & develop individual care plans; communicate in a professional manner; work effectively as a member of a team with diverse participants
-Knowledge and skill with supervisory methods.
-Knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques; Nutrition interventions in normal and compromised states.
-Ability to: provide support to breastfeeding women and families; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; follow through on assigned projects independently; work with a culturally diverse population. Previous experience with maternal child health & WIC Program strongly desired.
-work as a member of a Team; lead projects and provide direction to others.
-A valid State Drivers License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency and must adhere to VDHs driver safety policy.
-Has a baccalaureate degree with a major in food and nutrition or dietetics or has equivalent hours of food and nutrition coursework.
-Must have 2 years of work experience in nutrition or dietetics concurrent with or after completion of such degree.
-Must meet requirements for use of title Dietitian/Nutritionist as authorized by Code of VA 54.1 2731.

Additional Considerations

-Registration by Commission on Dietetic Registration
-Obtain certification as Competent Professional Authority within (6) months of hire--Knowledge of policies and procedures and federal laws and regulations pertaining to WIC strongly preferred.
