Job Description

Diesel Mechanic

Position Summary
The Diesel Mechanic performs maintenance and repair on commercial trucks and related equipment. This role ensures customer vehicles remain safe compliant and reliable. The Diesel Mechanic must be skilled in diagnostics troubleshooting and performing both scheduled and emergency repairs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect diagnose and repair diesel engines and truck systems.

  • Perform preventive maintenance to minimize downtime.

  • Maintain accurate service records.

  • Comply with safety and environmental regulations.

Day-to-Day Duties

  • Conduct diagnostic tests on engines transmissions and braking systems.

  • Perform oil changes filter replacements and fluid checks.

  • Repair or replace defective parts including tires brakes belts and hoses.

  • Use computer diagnostic tools and traditional methods to identify issues.

  • Document all repair activities in the work order system.

  • Communicate repair timelines and status to service advisors.

  • Maintain shop tools and equipment in good working condition.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certification in diesel technology preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years of diesel mechanic experience.

  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to read technical manuals and schematics.

  • Valid Virginia drivers license (CDL preferred).

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASE certifications in diesel repair.

  • Knowledge of DOT and Virginia inspection requirements.

  • Experience with tire-related maintenance on commercial trucks.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Average repair time.

  • Return rate for repeat issues.

  • Shop productivity and efficiency percentage.

  • Safety compliance record.

Work Environment

  • Reports to the Store Manager or Service Manager.

  • Shop-based full-time 40 hours per week.

  • Requires standing bending lifting up to 75 lbs.

  • Exposure to oil grease and heavy equipment.
