The Mount Vernon City School District is looking to hire aSocialStudies Teacher for grades 7-12 with a Special Education Certification. The candidate must possess the required certification/license and demonstrate an understanding of the content and appropriate skills. Job description details and expectations include:
- Proficient in NYS Social Studies Standards and NYS Grades 7-12 Social Studies Framework.
- Possess extensive knowledge of the NYS Regents Examinations in Global History and Geography II and United States History and Government that will be used to prepare lessons aligned to the NYS Regents examinations.
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction that will promote student inquiry and engagement.
- Conduct assessments of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual student needs.
- Willing and able to work in a collaborative teaching environment including co-teaching and interdisciplinary planning.
- Seek professional growth and professional learning opportunities.
- Demonstrate an ability to engage adolescent students and interact in a manner that promotes a positive academic experience for all students.
- Encourage family involvement and ensure effective communication with students and families.
- Experience with social and emotional learning preferred.
- Familiarity with best practices and content-area resources to reinforce NYS Social Studies Standards NYS Social Studies Framework and Regents examinations.
- Collaborates with general education teachers in all planning and changes to the IEP when they are working with students with IEPs.
- Meets periodically with students to assess and discuss students progress challenges and needs to meet their goals and /or objectives. Meets with parents students various educators and/or clinicians working with students.
- Reviews progress reports for their students throughout the school year.
- Advocates for students and works with all stakeholders.
- Facilitates the learning activities of exceptional children (Students with Specific Learning Challenges Speech/Language Impairments Intellectually Delayed Emotional Disturbance Other Health Impairments Autism Hearing Impairments Orthopedic Impairments Visual Impairments and Traumatic Brain Injury)
- In the attainment of grade-level subject school and system objectives
- Utilizes a wide variety of instructional strategies devices and methods
- Works with small and large instructional groups
- Functions effectively as a staff member of the school community
