Job Summary

Role Purpose

To provide expert legal advice and representation to clients ensuring their legal rights are protected and their best interests are served. The solicitor will handle a variety of legal matters including drafting legal documents conducting negotiations and representing clients in court proceedings.

Technical

  • Has and is developing foundation knowledge to be able to work effectively at a 13 year level in relevant practice areas.
  • Is able to work effectively with a senior team member takes instructions and be able to seek clarification when required.
  • Quality of work is at the required level of a solicitor and there is a high level of accuracy. The work has been proofread before being presented to ensure work is error-free and grammatically correct.
  • Collaborates with colleagues across all levels and shares knowledge.
  • Is developing proficiency with Netdocs ActionStep Spinika but aware of own skill gaps.
  • Is aware and uses available tools and systems to complete work.
  • Meets all compliance expectations (Conduct and Client Care Rules AML and Data Protection & Privacy)


Learning Development

  • Proactive career management by looking to maximise opportunities to gain experience.
  • Participates in The TW Academy with high attendance at internal CPD sessions (either in person or online) and completes training requirements after attending courses.
  • Develop a CPD plan including goal setting with supervisor each year.
  • Completes at least one article a year.
  • As per CPD Policy and The TW Academy
    • presents to peers at least once a year
    • presents to team at least twice a year
  • Is able to seek out and receive regular constructive feedback.
  • Is developing a good relationship with a mentor.


Business Development

  • Has some exposure to business development activities of senior team members and contributes to content for articles and other marketing initiatives when required.
  • Interacts professionally with all internal and external relationships.
  • Assists senior lawyers with client management.
  • Can take instructions from a client and provide advice in a managed and supervised manner.
  • Learns to adapt style and approach as needed.
  • Demonstrates Client Care where appropriate.
  • Looks for opportunities to be involved in the community.


Financial and Business Performance

  • Developing good fee recovery rates and habits.
  • Takes responsibility to ensure accurate time is billed on a matter.
  • Understands authors time and fee budgets and what is required to meet them.
  • Meets time recording budget.
  • Developing good time recording habits and accounting for both chargeable and nonchargeable time.
  • Minimises write-offs by being able to take instructions to ensure efficiencies when working on a matter.

Ideally you will have:

A completed NZ Law Degree

Admittance as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand only after

  • Completing a Professional Legal Studies Course.
  • Obtaining a Certificate of Completion from the New Zealand Council of Legal Education.


Knowledge / Experience

Practical experience in preparing legal documents and conducting legal research. Strong understanding of laws excellent communication and analytical skills. Personal attributes like attention to detail ethics integrity and problem-solving abilities are crucial for effectively providing legal advice and working with clients. Can handle various legal tasks competently.
