Job Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Hematology Oncology Inpatient team seeks two Clinical Directors to jointly lead Inpatient across our academic medical centers and network as part of a Co-Clinical Director model. The Co-Clinical Directors for Hematology Oncology Inpatient are responsible for overseeing and managing various aspects of inpatient oncology care. The leadership roles will report to the Division of Hematology/Oncology Leadership and Cancer Institute leadership and serve as key liaisons within hospital and Department of Medicine leadership. The Co- Clinical Director roles involve substantial coordination leadership and strategic planning to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care interdepartmental collaboration and the optimization of resources. They are responsible both for maintaining the highest quality standards of practice in but also for being agents of productive change effectively communicating with their team. The Co-Clinical Directors will spend time at both AMC locations. The Co-Clinical Director position is for a five-year term potentially renewable for a second.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Operations
- Ensure timely high-quality delivery of patient care consistent with the vision outlined by the program director
- Partners with Vice Chair Operations Inpatient Program Director Assistant Chief Nursing Officer Assistant Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) at the MGB Cancer Institute Network Director Senior Administrative Director Nurse Directors and APP Directors on clinical operations matters.
- Lead the Joint CI Leadership Council driving collaboration quality improvement and operational alignment across sites. (MD APP RN leadership). Oversees key hospital operations / quality improvement initiatives.
- Coordinates and manages physician coverage to ensure the appropriate number of inpatient service blocks are staffed
- Supervises the Inpatient Administrative Team ensuring effective coordination of operations and faculty support.
- Directs the Census & NEW Triage Team manage increasing clinical complexity and oncology patient flow across the AMCs and network sites.
- Oversees the Oncology Ombudsman Role ensuring consistent standards
- Leads collaboration with Patient Transfer Access Center and facilitates appropriate and timely patient transfers.
- Represents Oncology on the Department of Medicine Inpatient Executive Council meetings and serves on the Inpatient-Outpatient Council and other committees contributing to the institution-wide strategic initiatives.
- Leads the development of new pilot programs and sub-programs within the inpatient setting collaborating with colleagues and clinical directors across specialties (hematologic malignancies GI thoracic etc.) throughout MGB to enhance patient flow optimize resource utilization and improve quality of care.
- Coordinate with Alternative Pathways including the Supportive Care Unit (SCU) home hospital and Early Detection and Diagnostics Clinic.
Unit & Program Oversight
- Provides oversight of all inpatient oncology operations at their respective locations. Will work closely with the Unit Medical Directors Inpatient Program Director and ACMO to meet system wide goals.
- The MGH Clinical directors will oversee units at NWH and Salem which the BWH clinical director will oversee units at Faulkner and Spaulding.
- Partners with Program Director on faculty recruitment oversee onboarding of new inpatient faculty and support the integration of outpatient faculty during their inpatient service time.
- Leads and develops the Nocturnist Program including recruitment performance oversight and growth.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Medical Doctor (MD) or Advanced Practice Provider (APP) with substantial experience in oncology and inpatient care.
- Effective organizational and communication skills.
- Exemplary ability to mentor and develop others to support faculty and staff retention.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and multidisciplinary teams.
- A commitment to delivering high-quality patient care and continuous improvement.
- Strong work ethic and program development or business-oriented perspective.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary to communicate effectively with a large and diverse constituency including the chairs/chiefs senior departmental leaders research faculty at all levels research trainees and staff potential donors representatives and vendors.

- Attends meetings at BWH BWFH MGH Community locations and occasionally Assembly Row.
SYSTEM AND FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works within legal regulatory compliance accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by MGB.
- Complies with appropriate MGB policies and procedures.
- Brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate staff.
