- *** THE POSITION IS TIME-LIMITED LASTING UP TO 23 MONTHS CONCLUDING IN JULY 2027.***

The Infectious Diseases Section at the NC State Laboratory of Public Health is currently accepting applications for a Junior Sequencing Technologist. The primary purpose of this position is to perform dedicated wet laboratory sequencing work within the Sequencing and Bioinformatics Response laboratory to support epidemiological investigations and surveillance for a variety of pathogens in North Carolina. This position will perform all wet work along with the Senior Sequencing Technologist and will work with the supervisor and colleagues to support the expanded sequencing of pathogens within the Infectious Disease Unit. The position will also support validation and method development work quality assurance problem resolution and maintenance of sequencing methods and standard operating procedures (SOPs) within the laboratory.
This Position Will:- Perform next generation sequencing in accordance with standard operating procedures
- Extract nucleic acid from clinical specimens and/or infectious agents
- Prepare genomic DNA for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) or other sequencing methods
- Operate a wide array of instrumentation and automation to perform sequencing and related methods
- Perform data entry and generation of worksheets
- Perform routine quality control and documentation

The State Laboratory of Public Health (SLPH) we provide medical and environmental laboratory services such as testing consultation and training to public and private health provider organizations responsible for the promotion protection and assurance of the health of North Carolina citizens. SLPH serves the entire state as a reference laboratory for difficult unusual or otherwise unavailable laboratory procedures and assist in the development evaluation and standardization of medical and environmental laboratory testing procedures. We provide training and consultation to improve and assure quality services in other laboratories and certify milk and water laboratories and milk analysts. Applicants that possess the following skills are preferred: Employees in this position must be capable of meeting the Federal CLIA 88 personnel requirements for Testing Personnel in a laboratory performing high complexity testing. Applicants must provide copies of their transcript(s) and/or certification(s) to be considered for the position. Knowledge of biology molecular biology microbiology and next-generation sequencing principles Experience with good laboratory practice CLIA or other regulatory agency requirements Experience working in a clinical commercial industry or academic laboratory performing molecular testing while being knowledgeable about taking appropriate precautions to avoid infection working with potentially infectious materials Skill in the use of advanced laboratory equipment molecular instrumentation and in the performance of related procedures Hands on experience with Illumina and/or Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms. Knowledge of public health epidemiology biostatistics/bioinformatics including the use of statistical software and statistical programming ASCP or other similar certification.

Qualified applicants must possess and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:
Bachelors degree in medical laboratory technology chemistry or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory in the assigned area;
OR
Associates degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of medical laboratory experience;
OR
Completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of medical laboratory experience;
OR
