Job Summary
To serve as the Deputy Fire Chief to fully share with the Fire Chief the overall management and control of the Fire Protection Flight through two or more Assistant Fire Chiefs in charge of operations training and technical services. Assumes full responsibility for the Fire Protection Flight during the absence of the Fire Chief.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Supervises one of the functional areas within fire protection (Operations Training and/or Prevention).
- Plans develops reviews implements and evaluates department policy.
- Receives new guidance regulations or procedures from the Fire Chief and disseminates information to subordinates.
- Prepares and schedules assignments of subordinate personnel to operations training and/or fire inspection duties.
- Assist the Fire Chief in developing and implementing an overall company long-term strategic plan involving fire protection.
- Plans administers and supervises fire prevention education programs.
- Review construction and medication plans confers with engineers and provides technical/functional assistance on fire prevention and building design criteria.
- Identifies and reviews the status of base fire deficiencies and coordinates with the Fire Chief and other agencies for necessary corrective actions.
- Conducts recurring proficiency training in each functional area of fire protection.
- Assesses capabilities of fire protection programs recommends changes when necessary and manages personnel to ensure applicability of program objectives.
- Plans a comprehensive program of on-the-job and proficiency training for all fire protection and prevention personnel. Direct firefighting operations during emergencies and training evaluations.
- Serve as the on-scene commander of a fire/crash scene until relieved by the Fire Chief.
- Typically requires 10 years experience in fire service and other related experience is essential.
- The incumbent of this position must be certified by the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Fire Fighter Certification system as Fire Officer III Fire Inspector II Fire Instructor II HAZMAT Incident Commander and Airport Fire Fighter.
Basic Qualifications
- US Citizen
- Shall possess an Associates degree or higher degree in fire technology.
- Shall have ten years fire protection experience with a minimum of three years as the Assistant Chief for Operations.
- Shall have experience directing firefighting operations to include fighting aircraft and structural fires performing rescue services and responding to hazardous materials incidents medical emergencies and confined space rescues.
- Shall have knowledge of the chemistry of fire preventive maintenance and operations of firefighting and rescue equipment physical and chemical properties of combustible materials and building structures and their component systems.
- Shall have experience in management of fire prevention and protection plans and programs.
- Shall have the knowledge to act for the Fire Chief during his absence.
- Shall assume full charge in absence of the Fire Chief at crashes fire or emergency situations directing activities and personnel transmitting instructions to Assistant Chiefs on the scene or other personnel as to the procedures to be followed contingent on complexity of the incident type (3-1).
- Shall personally take charge when highly classified weapons or equipment are involved in fire.
- Shall possess an associate degree or higher degree in fire technology.
- Shall meet position certifications IAW DOD 6055.06-M.
Preferred Qualifications
- The incumbent of this position must be certified by the DoD Firefighter Certification system as Fire Officer III (includes Fire Officer I II) Fire Instructor II (includes Fire Instructor I) Fire Inspector II (includes Fire Inspector I) Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Incident Commander (includes HAZMAT Awareness HAZMAT Operations HAZMAT Technician) and Airport Fire Fighter (includes Firefighter I II).
