System Administrator (Tier II/III)

Location: Indianapolis IN or Bratenhal OH
Clearance Required: Secret (Tier 5 / IT-I)
Work Schedule: Full-time with 24/7 shift coverage and on-call rotations depending on specialization (Linux/OS Web or COGNOS)

Position Summary

The System Administrator is responsible for the secure efficient and reliable operation of DFAS DRAS-M IL-5 tenant systems across multiple environments including Development Test Production and Security Infrastructure. This role involves provisioning configuring and maintaining both operating systems and application platforms to support critical Department of Defense financial systems.

System Administrators serve as Tier II/III support staff and are tasked with advanced troubleshooting patching compliance enforcement and performance monitoring. Specializations may include:

  • Linux/OS Administrators Manage containerized applications Red Hat Linux-based operating systems and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) deployments.
  • Web Administrators Configure and secure enterprise web servers troubleshoot application delivery issues and maintain high-availability web services.
  • COGNOS Administrators Manage and support reporting servers to ensure DFAS financial reporting systems remain compliant and available.

This role requires technical depth in system operations familiarity with RMF and DoD STIGs and the ability to work in a collaborative team environment where uptime and security are paramount.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Tier II/III system administration for IL-5 tenant systems including Linux servers web platforms and reporting environments.
  • Install configure and maintain operating systems applications and middleware in compliance with DoD cybersecurity requirements.
  • Support Infrastructure as Code (IaC) deployments to automate provisioning and configuration management.
  • Apply system hardening and patch management processes to maintain compliance with DoD STIGs and RMF controls.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues coordinate with network engineers developers and database administrators to resolve incidents.
  • Manage containerized applications (Docker Kubernetes OpenShift) and ensure secure deployment in IL-5 environments.
  • For Web Administrators: Administer and secure Apache NGINX and Java-based web servers; support troubleshooting of GEX and other DFAS financial systems.
  • For COGNOS Administrators: Maintain COGNOS servers troubleshoot reporting issues and coordinate with DFAS stakeholders to ensure reporting compliance and availability.
  • Create and maintain documentation including SOPs architecture diagrams and incident resolution reports.
  • Support disaster recovery planning and continuity of operations for all assigned systems.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotations and shift coverage to ensure continuous availability.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science Information Technology or related discipline; OR equivalent years of direct system administration experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years system administration experience in DoD or IL-5 secure environments.
  • Proficiency with Linux operating systems (Red Hat preferred) and enterprise web servers.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization platforms such as Docker Kubernetes or OpenShift.
  • DoD 8570 IAT Level III certification required (e.g. CASP CE CCNP CISA CISSP (or Associate))
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across operating systems middleware and applications.
  • Knowledge of DoD STIGs RMF controls and cybersecurity compliance requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to create documentation and brief stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).
  • Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administrator (for hybrid cloud integrations).
  • Oracle or Java middleware experience in DoD financial systems.
  • IBM Cognos Administration Certification.
  • Prior DFAS or DISA enterprise system administration experience.
  • Experience in 24/7 mission-critical operations environments.
