The South Carolina Governors School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) seeks a dynamic and experienced professional to serve as its next Director of Teacher Development. This full-time 12-month position is central to GSSMs mission as a statewide leader in STEM education and will play a key role in expanding professional learning opportunities for South Carolina educators particularly in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence (Al).
GSSM is a public high school serving 11th-12th grade students residentially and 10th-12th grades through virtual programs. GSSMs Outreach Center engages over 9000 elementary and middle school students through various STEM educational programs around the state in partnership schools districts and SCs Technical College System.

GSSM is nationally recognized for the quality of its advanced STEM humanities student research and international programs. Our faculty and staff share a passion for their disciplines and a commitment to inspire and lead students to achieve their best while fostering the joy of learning.

GSSM is mission-driven and committed to bringing advanced STEM experiences within reach of every South Carolina family. The Outreach Curriculum and Instruction Specialist will join a dedicated team of professionals to support GSSMs mission.

This is a full-time 12-month position with benefits available. Compensation is competitive based on credentials experience and other unique qualifications.

Position Summary:
The Director of Teacher Development will lead the design coordination and implementation of high-impact professional development programs with a special focus on interdisciplinary data science and Al-infused learning. This role will expand GSSMs impact as a resource institute for K-12 educators and support teacher preparedness in emerging STEM fields.

Responsibilities of the Director of Teacher Development:

  • Curriculum Development & Teacher Support
    • Lead the GSSM Faculty Fellows program to create and pilot data science and Al integrated curriculum for K-12 classrooms.
    • Design hands-on engaging data science and Al modules emphasizing ethical Al use computational thinking and interdisciplinary connections.
  • Professional Learning & Program Leadership
    • Plan and deliver GSSMs week-long Data Science and Al Summer Institute.
    • Offer year-round professional learning workshops coaching and resource development for teachers statewide.
  • Outreach & Partnerships
    • Build strategic partnerships with universities ed-tech organizations and Al
      industry leaders.
    • Collaborate with school and district leaders to advocate for data science and Al integration in K-12 education.
    • Manage program budgets reporting and evaluation in coordination with GSSM leadership.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Vice President for Outreach.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • Masters degree in Education Computer Science Instructional Technology or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of data science and Al concepts and their educational applications.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical Al use in education.
  • Experience in curriculum development and teacher professional development.
  • Excellent leadership communication and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing large-scale professional learning programs.
  • Familiarity with open educational resources (OER and curriculum sharing platforms.
  • Knowledge of South Carolinas K-12 education landscape standards and teacher training needs.
