PATROL LIEUTENANT & DEPUTY CHIEF
The Police Lieutenant & Deputy Chief is a sworn police officer position with full arrest powers as defined by Virginia statute sworn to uphold and follow all local state and federal laws in the application of police procedure. The Police Lieutenant oversees and directs the activities of the sworn and unsworn officers and keeps the Chief of Campus Police informed about all operational activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serves as and performs the duties of CSA to whom students and employees should report criminal offenses.
- Completes annual CSA training.
- Functions as a sworn police officer and performs all duties required of that position.
- Works assigned shifts in the patrol division as needed and/or scheduled to include day night and afternoon shifts on all different days of the week and holidays as needed.
- Maintains active Virginia Law Enforcement Officer Certification as a certified police officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. This requires attending 40 hours of re-certification training biannually.
- Must train and qualify annually with service weapon.
- Serves as the immediate supervisor for the departments sworn Police Officers and Campus Safety Officers.
- Completes annual performance evaluations on all patrol personnel.
- Receives feedback from the public (complaints and commendations) and forwards any issues to the Chief of Campus Police.
- Critiques all incident reports and provides feedback to employees before final approval.
- Oversees and handles all items of evidentiary value taken by the department.
- Manages all found property turned into the department.
- Manages all items stored for safekeeping at the department.
- Oversees the collection storage and disposal of abandoned bikes and other property.
- Serves as the departments Training Officer ensuring that all sworn Police Officers are meeting DCJS standards for Law Enforcement Certification.
- Ensures that all Campus Safety Officers are meeting DCJS standards for certification.
- Serves as the departments Training Officer ensuring that all sworn Police Officers meet DCJS standards for Law Enforcement Certification.
- Ensures that all Campus Safety Officers are meeting DCJS standards for certification.
- Supervises the Field Training of all new Police Officers and CSOs by managing the departments Field Training Program.
- Acts as the Chief of Police in the absence of the Chief or when he is unavailable.
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the department to ensure a high level of protection and service to the campus community.
- Ensures that proper shift coverage is maintained by creating a bi-weekly patrol schedule to include coverage of special events outside of regular duty hours.
- Assigns personnel to special and athletic events by creating rosters and listing duties for each post.
- Ensures that the Daily Crime Log is kept up to date and meets Clery standards.
- Ensures that the Fire Log is kept up to date and meets Clery standards.
- Serves on the Clery Compliance Committee to assist in ensuring that the college is complying with federal regulations under the Clery Law.
- Assists with the creation of the Annual Security Report by providing feedback.
- Attends all mandatory staff meetings.
- Assists in creating an agenda for staff meetings.
- With the Chief of Police and Administration actively participates directly in the preparation of a comprehensive general plan for emergency preparedness.
- Works closely with staff and external agencies in the event of an emergency or natural disaster and appropriately briefs police administration about critical incidents as they unfold.
- Creates and sends out Emergency Notifications when required.
- Maintains confidentiality about all sensitive and/or ongoing investigations within the Police Department.
- Trains to ensure staff maintain confidentiality.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School graduate or equivalent required
- Bachelors degree preferred
- Virginia Law Enforcement Officer certification is required
- 3 or more years Police Officer required
- 5 or more years of supervisory experience preferred
- CPR Certification or the ability to acquire required
- AED Certification or the ability to acquire required
- Possess a valid drivers license and maintain a good driving record required
Pay is competitive and salary is commensurate with experience. This full-time position offers a full benefits package including paid tuition at the College for eligible dependents.
