Provides ongoing supervision and direction to delinquent youth in residence as determined by the youth specialists assignment in either the agencys Detention Unit or Treatment Unit or provides supportive supervision based on an intake office assignment.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 term credits) with a minimum of 15 semester (23 term) credits in one or a combination of the following: social work sociology psychology family ecology family and child development counseling and guidance criminal justice community services family studies counseling psychology human services education early childhood education secondary education or special education.

Experience

Youth Specialist 7
No specific type or amount is required

Youth Specialist 8
One year of experience equivalent to a Youth Specialist 7

Youth Specialist E9
Two years of experience equivalent to a Youth Specialist including one year equivalent to a Youth Specialist 8.

Alternate Education and Experience

Youth Specialist 7 - 10
Four years of experience in the care or supervision of youths in a residential group setting providing case management services in mental health substance abuse domestic violence delinquency or other advocacy-related services for at-risk youth may be substituted for the education requirement.

OR

Three years of Youth Aide experience including one year equivalent to a Youth Aide E8 may be substituted for the education requirement.

OR

Bachelors degree in any major with a with a minimum of 8 semester credits in one or a combination of the following: social work sociology psychology family ecology family and/or child development counseling and guidance criminal justice community services family studies counseling psychology human services education early childhood education secondary education or special education may be substituted for the education requirement.

Position(s) are located in the Department of Health and Human Services Michigan Childrens Services Agency Juvenile Justice Bay Pines Center 2425 North 30th Street Escanaba MI. 49829.



Positions primarily are being filled as permanent-intermittent (hours may vary) with the possibility of going permanent full-time in the future but there is no guarantee. It is possible that some positions may be filled as limited term as needed. If a position is filled as limited term there is potential that it could become permanent (or permanent-intermittent) but it is never guaranteed. Traditionally employees in this position average 40 hours per week; however overtime and full-time hours are not guaranteed.

As a Condition of Employment:
  • Possession of a valid drivers license.
  • Any individual with a felony conviction or who has a pending felony charge is ineligible for consideration for employment.
  • An applicant (who was not currently employed in a Bureau of Juvenile Justice facility prior to November 1 2000) who has been convicted of any misdemeanor shall not be eligible for employment until two years subsequent to the completion of any sentence imposed including probation.
